Service interval

Our 23 alt is low milage. About 13,600 now. Last december at last service is was 12k. Our service dealer, one we really like not the one we bought from, says service at 6 months or 5k miles whichever comes first. My question is that accurate for low milage Mavericks? Longer time if less miles? Many thanks, Donald

Methinks the dealer is overselling you on service, yes lower miles = longer intervals (up to one year is specified in my '26 owners manual). So with your low mileage it should be once a year! You can always do it more frequently but it's not usually necessary with modern vehicles and lubricants.

So what does your owners manual say? If you take a lot of short trips, follow the "severe service" schedule, for example for my model year (2026) it mentions to changed the air filter every 30k miles and the spark plugs every 60k miles for "severe service" but does not mention severe service items for things like oil changes.

The manual also mentions that 1 year is the maximum between oil changes, otherwise to follow the oil minder when it comes up on the dashboard.

This is for a 2026, you have to check your own owners manual (you can find it online in your Ford Owner account).

The real answer is “it depends”. In the grand scheme of things, oil changes are cheap. Most motor oil manufacturers suggest only going a year max, and that is for high quality synthetic oil. The oil itself not bad necessarily, but you need to consider water and acids that form over time, especially in rarely used vehicles. Direct injected engines and Hybrids both have challenges brought on by low use.
Use a very high quality synthetic and change once a year if you rarely drive it.
Me, because I plan on keeping mine a long time, I change more often, but that gives me piece of mind.

They are overdoing it considering it's a hybrid.

So little mileage I'm guessing more city than highway - so more EV than straight engine use.

Even for the ancient thinking of 3k changes with ancient oil and old style engines - you may have even less than that on the engine when 5k rolls around on the tires.

And this engine doesn't need 3k by a long shot - and today's oil easily good for a year.
