You know this is just crazy town when what you purchase isn't yours - Makes me glad I have not messed with Forscan - though Ford is not named - you can bet it will be an industry move ...

Will be interesting to see how this turns out .....

Automakers push 3 to 5 years in prison for accessing your car data

"Modern cars are rolling computers packed with sensors, cameras, microphones, and always-on connectivity, yet the people who own them are being told that peeking under the digital hood could be treated like a serious crime. As automakers lobby to lock down access to vehicle data and software, they are leaning on broad anti-hacking laws that already threaten security researchers and independent repairers with years behind bars. The result is a collision between public safety, privacy, and the basic idea that you should be allowed to understand and fix the machine you paid for."

Cheers

This sounds like the same underhanded shit that John Deere engages in. They don't want you to have access to that stuff because then you might be able to fix YOUR OWN vehicle that you bought and paid for YOURSELF instead of having to drag it into a dealership who has been blessed by the mother ship to fix your shit. Right to repair is something we as consumers should all be fighting for. These companies all like to hide behind the guise of "safety" but it's straight bullshit. As usual their bottom line is the only thing they're concerned with and if they can make more money by restricting access to certain things, you can bet your sweet-ass they'll do it every time.

...I might be a bit passionate about this topic.

You are not going to go to jail for doing Forscan mods. There's a nice legal precedence where confusion favors the defendant. I signed no contract stating I won't futz around with my truck and Ford would be hard pressed to find a jury to understand what Ford would even be on about. Plus, one of the key selling points about the Maverick was your ability to 3D print add-ons. Would be hard for Ford to get defensive about mods at that point.

As Forscan mods only requires a specific tool and is otherwise not security locked, there is no implication that Ford wanted it protected. It would be different if Ford required a secret security code to make Forscan work.

Watch some Louis Rossman videos on YouTube.
Some. He's a huge advocate for right-to-repair, but he is not right about everything. While there might be some maliciousness (John Deere; Apple), sometimes companies are just incompetent.

Plus, most of his videos could be about 60% shorter if he didn't just rant about the same thing over and over. He also has that "complain about New York but votes in Texas for the same crap he complained about in New York" vibe.

Don't know why they would need a law to prevent access. Manufacturer could just encrypt the data and lock it down. Unless their data security team is incompetent.
Oh wait, I just answered my own question :ROFLMAO:

turning off stop/start would be pretty tough prosecute since they put a button in the vehicle to do it

Reminds me of time I encrypted a database. Five years later a contractor was hired to upgrade the software. I furnished the encryption code both source and compiled. Then after six or seven months they gave up saying they could not do it. I think they had a problem decoding a variable length record stored within a 15k length record with the displacement being located in the account number index record. Then the length of the variable encrypted record was 28 bytes to the length of the record! Just guessing but I suspect they were trying to convert all my programming instructions and not just work with the data????

If you're a regular home compter user (email, websurfing, maybe light office application use) and don't specifically need to use something like Office 365, AutoCad, or Adobe Photoshop, my opinion is that you're better off with a user-friendly Linux distribution like Zorin or Linux Mint instead of Windows 10 , even if you've made arrangements to get security updates for a year and especially if you haven't.

If this becomes an issue then this need to be a quid-pro-quo. If owners for to jail for 3 to 5, then automakers shout go to jail for the same period because they put out POS software. IMO

A smart auto maker would definitely do everything possible to do all repairs in house, because its profitable and they get you in regularly to see the new cars, , , , Duh !
It's the way of a free market. Vote with your wallet.
