when ford built these, did they not use any coating for protection? What undercoating would you all recommend?

If you are wanting something to just spray on the uncoated Ive had good luck with this on my Jeep restorations. -

Boeshield T9 is one of the best products to prevent that minor surface rust and corrosion. It’s widely accepted and used within the Aerospace and Marine industries.

Won't the parts shown in the OPs pic wear out and need replaced well before the rust and corrosion causes them to go bad?

The spindle itself probably shouldn't require replacement as a matter of course, but a big hunk of cast iron like that isn't going to rust out until long after the sheetmetal comprising the body of the truck.

Also I believe the CV shafts do come with some sort of phosphate coat (which in itself is technically a sort of rust) but it must be very light. From the last thread whinging about a little rust:

I would recommend the 2 part process called auto armor. I had it done when new. Google Bullet Liner in Green Bay, WI. It will show you their process.
