Most likely this issue is on all hybrids. I don’t use remote start or warm up for long time. Typically keep the temp at 68. And have less than 500 miles, so I haven’t experienced the issue, smell or surging idle. Hopefully ford figures it out and corrects it soon.

Can we ask for some clarity like “is your car’s heat set to max upon startup and heated seats (if applicable) are on”. My guess is it’s a feedback loop between the initial startup feeling the cold outside temperature, the load of the heat on high and heated seats and defrost, and is cranking engine output to max to accommodate the load and backing off at a set point, but dropping below that set point once again to cause the surging. If people who experience this have a high load upon initial startup (like heat and all) then that would help to narrow down the problem.

Does anyone think that type of fuel such as winter/summer blend, 87-91-93 octane or whether or not an ethanol blend as opposed to zero ethanol fuel has an impact on the issue? I realize it shouldn’t but just a thought.

After reading page after page on this dangerous situation, and seemingly dozens of people trying to place blame on the fact that you shouldn't be warming your car,, I have to say,,WTF is wrong here?? It has nothing to do with you starting your car to warm it up,, IT'S THE DAM DESIGN, AND IT NEEDS TO BE FIXED!!! It's very common in areas north to leave your car running, sometimes for over an hour, when you start it at -20 with a -60 wind chill, as well as leave it run between stops when your running around,,at -20, why would it be an issue,,very common practice that's been done for decades up here when it really gets cold. Since when is there a rule you cant warm your car,, that's bullshit!! FORD should be bending over backwards to remedy there fuc# up,, and fast!! AND should be in DIRECT CONTACT with every current owner warning them of this issue, doing what ever it takes to insure public safety. Also, what do you think these high temperatures have done to the integrity of the cylinder head and block? THERE NEEDS TO BE ANSWERS,,, FAST!!! You can bet your rear, they know whats up, but don't mind risking the public safety, or the chance of future engine integrity because of corporate greed. I have really been high on this model,, now I don't think I'd want one at any price. This is crazy,, A cheap little truck thats a quality item,, looks like thats a farce. I really had my hopes up for getting one,, a Ford Motor Company let down,, just glad at this point avliabilty ran out before I bought into this disaster. Sorry to get on my soap box,, but this really is sleazy business practices.

Mar 1 2022 2022 Maverick, 2020-2022 Escape – 2.5L FHEV – Idle Surge And/Or Rough Idle WithHigh Temperature In The Catalytic Convertor And Sulfur Odor In The Cab
Some 2022 Maverick and 2020-2022 Escape vehicles equipped with a 2.5L full hybrid electric vehicle (FHEV) powertrain may exhibit an idle surge and/or rough idle with high temperature in the catalytic convertor and sulfur odor in the cab. This may be due to the software installed in the powertrain control module (PCM).This condition does not affect vehicle durability and no additional diagnosis or service is required for this condition at this time. Inform customers that they can continue to drive the vehicle and engineering is currently developing a software update that is expected in the last week of March 2022. Once the softwareupdate is available, contact the customer and schedule a follow-up appointment for repair.

Just read this on another tread.

They have got to be kidding. A catalytic converter that gets so hot it glows red doesn't affect it's durability?? Sure... LOL

At least they're starting to acknowledge it.

Allllright… forgive a little humorous venting here…

Since they’re obviously not kidding us, it’s clearly just a CYA situation— Ford covering their behinds, that is, not ours. It’s a load of malarkey if they think I’m gonna believe my molten ORANGE cat which overheated multiple times is “A-OK”.

I wanted to absolutely LOVE my Maverick, but if that’s their official position, they might want to see what happens when I go against my service manager’s suggestion and let my vehicle idle in the cold or attempt to defrost an ice encrusted windshield on my next 6 degree morning, which should be arriving in a week.

But you know what— I’m not going to wait, because I’m likely selling Mav to Carvana for a profit and Ford can lose my business and who knows how many others'.

I’m a patient man, a rational man, an understanding man, but this is bovine manure. I could have thrown the One Ring into my engine bay and restored order to Middle Earth the first time this happened to my Mav.

Camel’s back, meet “Straw.”

Happy to know Ford is working on fixing the issue and should be rolled out soon. Now there is still an issue with the 12V harness, hopefully they address both defect in the same visit.

I have a Lariat non Lux Hybrid with about 1200 miles so
far. Heat has been set to 72 and especially if the car is completely cold- like it sits two days or quite cold temps (truck sits outside) I can get this revving. I haven’t let it continue to get the glowing cat because I’m aware of the issue and have monitored the remote start to see if my truck does it. It seems like it’s revving up and then almost stalling repeatedly. I’ve also got in and gave it gas and it continued to do the revving. In this video I did the remote start in the house and immediately walked out to see if it was ok. It hasn’t been an issue if I start the car normally (so far) without the remote start and let it warm up a little
