Regrets with your engine choice?

I've got a Hybrid and can't even get 30 MPG around town. The darn thing keeps locking up with a "Shift SYS Fault" which leaves me stuck until it cools down or just decides to work again. I took it into the dealer (Aug. 18th after 5 failures) and they said it was a loose pin connection in a wiring plug. Now we come to the Holiday weekend and it failed 9/1, 9/3, 9/5. The truck only has 2,251 miles on it. So to answer your question, ECO or Hybrid? I wish I didn't buy a Maverick. Thank goodness we have two other reliable vehicles - a Toyota and a Honda. Otherwise I'd have to Uber everywhere.

Yes. But only because there's no gears you don't think you're accelerating nearly as fast as you really are.

When this truck has 191hp remember those horses are pulling a lot less than other trucks.

I ordered a hybrid first but realized my camper would be to heavy. So I switch to a EcoBoost, Don't regret switching but wish they would have had a hybrid with 4K towing. Going from a 4.0L V6 Ranger getting around 18 mpg to an EcoBoost. Getting around 28 mpg I love it.

Nope. Love the EB. Could care less about mileage. Drive it less than 6k miles a year(October)

A coworker let me drive his EB around and I was almost shocked at how quick it felt. Fun even. If I could find a hybrid to drive I’m sure it would make this a bit easier (as I’m sure a lot of people feel)

i 100% understand about the mileage. I drove around getting 13 or so city then 57 mpg hwy in a TDi. The 13 mpg got old, quick, but it was fun. Tdi had enough torque to not be boring but it was never fun. If the hybrid Maverick is like the TDi then I think I’ll be happy but if it drives like a Prius i feel I’ll start to regret going that way within a year.

I ordered both. Got my Eco November of 2021. Drove great but didn't like the way gas was headed so I sold it and made 5k

Hybrid came in jan of 22 and love it. Not as good on the highway as the Eco but save quite a bit at the pump.

a year ago when i was ordering mine i had planned to go with the hybrid. after researching it a bit a learned the hybrid would cause delays and i needed a new vehicle ASAP, so i ordered the exact options i always intended but went for the ecoboost. no regrets and every since my first oil change i have never averaged below 30MPG in real world commuter driving.

My biggest indecision comes from towing capacity. I *probably* won't need more towing cap than the hybrid delivers but...what if I do. That's my worry. I don't want to sacrifice all those awesome MPG's if I don't need to. It's aggravating. I'm getting my ecoboost in a couple weeks and it's 22/30 will be a little better than my 17/23 MPG Sierra 1500. Really struggling with whether to order a hybrid.

If you want passing power and similar mpg hwy, get the ecoboost. If you want city mpg get the hybrid. Or like this video shows, get one of each if you want the best of both worlds.

No regrets on ordering a Hybrid or waiting 11 months to get it. Getting over 44mpg average over almost 4,000 miles and I drive mostly highway. Has been able to do everything I've needed it to so far but I also know I didn't buy an F150 and I don't expect it to do the same things. As long as you understand what it's good at and what its limitations are you will be happy with whichever engine you select.

As for highway driving in the Hybrid, I have not had any issues whatsoever. I was cruising to work this morning at 80mpg in Eco and had no problem passing or keeping up in the fast lane. You do not need an Eco if you want to pass people, that is just ignorant to think/say.

Absolutely correct!

But loaded with payload or towing that EB is going to pull much harder and safer. To counter my own point, most would have already gone EB with 4k anyway if they intended to pull any sort of heavy payloads or tow decently. So you can ignore my stupid strawman argument.

My Hybrid maverick has 191 HP...the 1980 corvette had 180 HP...the 1975 corvette stingray had 165 HP...and they were within 200 pounds of each other...'nuff said.

Yeah, I was wondering about that as well...

I've owned three VW Jetta TDIs, and never got less than 34 mpg, no matter how hard I abused them. More typically it was around 42-43, and I've "hypermiled" a few times to get it well above 50. I kind of regret turning mine in during DieselGate, even though they paid me enough for it to buy a same-year Toyota Prius C that gets even better mileage. The difference is the Jetta TDI was a blast to drive, while the Prius is - well - "transportation" at best. It's reliable, but it's just boring as heck...

I drove a Maverick EB at the dealer (Lariat Lux/360 with 4K tow package), and it was surprisingly quick and fun to drive. Even though I know the hybrid will be a bit slower, it will still be a HUGE improvement over the Prius, and I am sure that I will really enjoy driving it... As someone else pointed out, it's got just over twice the HP, a LOT more torque, and it weighs substantially less than my current Prius.

Oh -- I also owned a '72 Maverick 2-door with the 4-cylinder engine smaller base 6-cylinder engine and a "three on the tree" manual. I thought I was pretty hot stuff getting 22 mpg! Cars (and trucks) have come a long way...

[Note: Corrected reference to 4-cylinder after several people reminded me that the 72 Mav didn't have a 4-cylinder available. My girlfriend's 74 Mav had the 8-cylinder and automatic, so by comparison, my 6 felt like a small 4-cylinder...]

I got an ecoboost because I need AWD, but I totally respect the money you can save with a hybrid. I was curious to see how much you'd save over 10 years at $4 a gallon, so I whipped up the Excel sheet below. If you add another $400 for the upcharge to ecoboost, it's about $5,000. So yea, I respect that. For a retiree on minimal Social Security, or a young family - $500 a year saved is a lot of money.
