It doesn't. It's MPGe ("equivalent"), which is a way to try to compare EV efficiency with gas vehicles. 2023 Escape PHEV gets 40 mpg combined running on gas, which is about the same as a non-PHEV 2023 Escape Hybrid.

My driving is almost exclusively with 5 miles of my home...but I am retired. Church and grocery store. I could have gotten by with a golf cart, but I like a cabin to keep me warm, dry or cool 😎

I do wish we had an AWD PHEV of the Maverick. Not sure I could overcome my cheapness, though, for what that would cost. $35k - I could do. $40k + like the Escape and Rav PHEVs - nah.
Driving around locally on EV is awesome, plus we have solar. Our Prius Prime (2021) was rated 25 EV miles, but around town without HVAC on I get 35. Then on hybrid road trips we pull 50-60+ mpg. Not fun to drive, but so dang efficient!

Will be selling when my XL hybrid arrives, though. :D Very against my nature to choose a less efficient way to go, but faster, more fun, and safer with larger size/height, to drive.
No perfect vehicle - everything is a compromise at some point.

Another person that shouldn't be allowed to order a Maverick. In what world does an Escape get 101 mpg - are you delusional? Name any car that does.
Why do you think the rust proofing is any different on an Escape? I've lived in the plains states all my life and never had a car rust.
And you took an order slot or a Maverick from someone else that has been waiting.
It is rated 101 MPGe, sorry if I confused you by dropping the e, which stands for equivalent. It seems that you do not understand the e-coat process, which before the automakers started using that process, vehicles rusted out quickly, especially around the wheel wells in states like Ohio that used salt on the highways. Ford started using it on 86 on the Taurus which made that car very desireable. It added strength and soundproofing to the vehicle, and also allowed them to used a thinner gauge metal, reducing the vehicle weight. The entire Unibody would leave the weld shop and was entirely dipped in the solution that was electically charged to the metal. Before this process, it was necessary to Ziebart the undercarriage, but still left many other metal body parts subject to early rust. The Maverick is the cheapest vehicle in the Ford lineup... because they eliminated certain components, and did not e-coat some parts and several other cost cutting things were done. You get what you pay for. If you read my post, this was only one factor in my decision. FoMoCo credit not offering a reasonable interest rate under the bank rates weighed in on my decision heavier. A $3750 tax rebate on my PHEV is an added plus to the $500 and $1000 incentives at the dealership, plus my A plan price.... I got more vehicle for the same price when you consider the savings in interest. Buy what you want... I did.

Try putting even one sheet of plywood in your Escape . . .
For years I made my little Buick Encore act like a pickup with a light 4'x 8' trailer. It tilted and was damn handy. It's still damn handy with my Maverick and its little bed. No way I could get my John Deere mower in my Mav but no problem with the trailer.

When more battery powered cars hit the road electric costs are going to skyrocket and your convenience math will be history. Not to mention all the wanton borrowing that will some day go away that make your rebate also disappear.

I think I hit a nerve exercising my right to spend my money to meet my needs. I'm retired... I have 0 desire to haul a sheet of plywood. Since 1973, I have purchased approximately 30 new vehicles, and only 2 were trucks, a 2019 Ranger Lariat and a 2021 F-150 Lariat and used the bed of the F-150 twice to haul something that wouldn't fit in any car or SUV. I'll give you a call if I need to borrow your truck. Thanks for thinking about what I'm not going to miss.

My 14 year old ram has held up very well in Michigan with nothing done as far as aftermarket rust proofing .I'm hoping to get another 10 years from it.nothing was done to my 23 mav either, will see if it holds up as good as the dodge!
I have a sink in my garage with a small hot water heater connected to it, and a hose on the bib and a wand on the hose. I wash my cars in the driveway with it, and in the winter if salt has been used they get a wash off underneath before pulling them in.

This is one of more interesting Threads Ive seen on this site. I love it. Lots of information about comparisons. My 05 Ranger was to be replaced by the Mav. However the 4 cylinder Standard Tran Ranger is the cockroach of trucks and way past 300k Miles and it refuses to want a new engine and it still sits there and looks at its baby brother (The 2023 Mav ) like try and follow that bubba. I did put a Clutch in it at 180 K. Both Need ratchet straps to take on a 42 inch craftsman mower. But they do it. I had ordered a 2024 Mav when it looked like I wasn't going to get the 23. No Rust on the ranger yet. Just a post have a nice day

Glad you wound up with what made you happier. I just like having a bed even if I rarely use it. Recently I had to move and my Ford Ranger bed definitely came in handy. Wish you all the best low cost travels even if they aren't in a Ford Maverick.

We have no shortage of road salt in Nothern Ohio , we have a salt mine that runs under Lake Erie. The excessive use of road salt here has always been one of my pet peevs. It does millions of dollars of damage to motor vehicles every winter.

I don't mean this to be negative or to offend--the post comes off (to me) as seeking validation for your refusal of a vehicle as insufficient, on the very forums dedicated to said vehicle. I think the way your post was presented was destined to start controversy.

I'm glad you got what is best for you and makes you feel good about your purchase. I just don't see any scenario in which this post was not going to create unnecessary controversy, especially as the reasoning for your decision is largely personal/anecdotal based on your specific needs or wants--those may not be a basis of reasoning that are applicable to everybody.

Just out of curiosity what's your source here? I googled for an article on Ford not e-coating and couldn't find one.
There isn't one because it's completely false. Ford (& every other OEM) does not sell any model in NA that isn't factory ecoated.
