Have five or six 64 GB's Flash drives that work fine....
I buy 8 GB flash drives off AliExpress for $3.50 each.
I find SD drive are so cheap I store only 100+ songs on each SD drive so it is easier to page thru to select songs.
Have separate SD drives for various music: Pop, Classical, Country, Musical, etc.
I got a really small Type C Micro SD card reader & 4GB card on Amazon. Since I don't use the Type C for my phone it works great for music and not obtrusive.

Those Look just like mine but mine have internal memory, have no SD Card, internal memory flash drives are definitely faster.

FYI - I use 2,5 gigabyte slash drive and experimented by loading 300+ songs on my little flash drive. Initially it took the radio display 10-15 seconds to scroll thru the 300 songs to build a table of contents of music. Somehow the Maverick memory keeps the table of contents of the Flash Drive and subsequently it instantly displays the table of contents when the Maverick is turned on.

Flash drive seems to work faster WITHOUT having sub-folders on the drive.

I'm 90% sure the USB ports will not read a thumb drive or SD card over 8GB. I tried multiple drives and SD cards and ended up using a 4GB micro SD card installed in a USB-C reader. I did not have an 8GB device to try, but I know a 16 & 32 will not read. If someone has an 8GB to try we can be 100% sure what the max capacity really is.
My 32GB USB Thumb Drive disagrees with you as it works great in the Front USB Port.

I downloaded about 400 songs onto a thumb drive and tried it last night in the Mav. The stereo system did not recognize it at all. When I touched on sources the USB never showed. Do I need a special sort of USB drive? I just used one I had in a drawer, it was probably 3 years old at least. What am I missing? Thanks in advance.
I use cheap 64GB usb thumb drives that I bought from Amazon (cheap). They use: exFAT file system. I use one for music and another to update Sync when needed (I just updated the new sync version 3.04xx available on the Ford website). No issues at all.

I capitulate... For some reason my Mav did not like my 16 or 32GB attempts.

I used a Sandisk 32gb Ultra Dual Drive M3.0 that I got from Amazon. I didn't need to format it. I love it because it's compact and doesn't stick out like a sore thumb.
Thanks for this link. I like that it can be plugged in either USB slots. I'll give this a try.
I just brought my Maverick home and my USB doesn't seem to recognize the drive either. It eventually does, but sometimes several minutes elapses. I had no problem in my previous Escape.

not true. I have a 128GB thumb drive and the mav reads it just fine. But all of the music are on the root of the drive so there aren't folders to sort through

Format the thumb drive to fat or fat32... I hate Apple crap, and they format something else... but linux can read apples format, not windoze..
