It’s crazy how many features are controlled by software.
From what I saw, the software update just provides a fail safe if it doesn't go into park. Doesn't really fix the underlying issue which is mechanical in nature

There is a parking pawl actually.
Thanks for info! Is the parking pawl part of the transmission or brake system? Do EB & Hybrid share the same pawl mechanics? Thanks again for your info:)

Not exactly.
This shows why there is obviously room to coast before a catch, in my mind also why you could have a non-catch situation.
Bear in mind this is 1 prior model version to 22-24 Mav's - Weber University videos have more info in more recent videos showing it's the same.
This guy is faster talker though.

ETA:
Webster for interesting compare and deeper dive if desired.

Will be curious about this one. FWIW, mine auto-sets the parking brake when I switch into “park” on most any degree of incline.

I don't understand the worry of it rolling away, the vehicle goes into park and will not roll away in park. I have not used a parking brake in any of my cars over decades and have never had any issues. I know you depend on the pin prawl locking it however the parking brake is not an issue of it rolling away.
It makes as much sense as the earlier recall ("Recall: #25C17 SECURING THE PASSENGER AIRBAG DISABLE INDICATOR PADI LAMP TO THE INSTRUMENT BEZEL"). The useless result of more federal regulations (which in themselves are evidence of the inability of Congress to do a single useful thing).

I have found that when parking on even a slight upward or downward angle, my parking brake would automatically engage. If I were parking in an area where it would be questionable, I would manually engage the parking brake.

what I don't understand is people seemingly incapable of setting the PB themselves instead of expecting the vehicle to do everything for them, down hill? turn the front wheels into the curb so it acts as a chock, uphill? turn wheels away from the curb so it roll that way. no curb? turn the wheels so if it did get loose it would go the shortest distance at the slowest speed before it came to a stop, IE a tree, rock, building.

Read the summary in the original post. It’s not the parking brake, it’s the parking module.

I went for decades not using a parking brake too. Using the gear on the auto transmission to hold the car.

Was not good for the transmission, however. Every now & then it was difficult to shift out of park - especially if parked on a hill!

Anyway, after owning a manual with no “Park” only “Neutral” and forced to use parking brake - I got into the habit even on my automatics:)
I also left my manual in gear. And if real steep, i turned the wheels appropriately. and Always use the Ebrake.

Pretty basic stuff that should be taught when you learn to drive.
Same concepts apply to Auto.

When I park my Lobo, the E brake goes on while my foot is on the brake. Then I shut it off (which puts it into Park automatically). Not letting it 'rest' on the park pin.

Of course you’re correct. It has been years since I drove a manual and WAS taught to leave it gear when parking. I did it then - but forgot the procedure when posting. Thank you for correcting the misinformation I posted!

Oh, it turns out the recall is for the park module not the parking brake.

Thank you admin for editing in the actual recall in the OP.

Yeah, we can see a slight bevel on the ratchet wheel there and the engagement pin is o a spring too, and a spring only moves a thing so fast. Thus if you engage while still slightly moving you'll hear it click clack as it skips over a couple of positions. Engage at speed, not sure software allows on this one, but you'd get a long fart like card in spokes, because that what it is effectively, a thick card in bicycle spokes. Anyway, with a bit of wear, it's easier to disengage it by steady pressure or a knock, and then it could roll away.

I don't understand the worry of it rolling away
and there are no known examples of any of these vehicles rolling away.

Everyone should read the actual recall .

Some highlights:

  1. This began in July when a single MachE threw a code during inspection at the plant. Shifting it back into drive and then park clears the problem. When additional MachEs did the same thing Ford asked the manufacturer of the Integrated Park Module (IPM) to tear down and inspect the part from one of these MachEs and found "no evidence of a mechanical issue"
  2. When the same code showed up on a couple Mavericks rolling off the line in Hermosillo, Ford did it's own investigation with "an X-ray of a transmission removed from the vehicle showed the IPM pawl physically bound with the IPM slide".
  3. Ford did additional computer modeling to understand the conditions that could lead to the IPM binding up and is updating the software to better detect and correct the condition.

There are only 22 Mach-E, 4 Maverick, and 16 F-150 Lightning warranty claims that might be related to this problem. Numbers to keep in mind when you read clickbait headlines about 270,000 vehicles recalled.
