We switched to the Mav from a sedan and sometimes I miss having a trunk to throw a cooler and other stuff in. A hard tonneau cover and 2x6 would get the job done, but I'm cheap, and I already had the wood, so I put together what I'm calling the Pickup Truck Trunk.

The front piece slots into the bed pockets, with a spacer at the bottom to increase the footprint.
The 2 side blocks slot under the bed edge and hold down the top with 5/16" carriage bolts and star knobs. The 1by is cut to length to fit snugly into a pocket in the bed side with a cut out for one of clips for the plastic bed toppers.
The top piece has a J channel to lock the front piece. It's cleats are also trapped, side to side, by the bed, in front by the side blocks and in back by the tailgate.

I also added a couple pieces of parachute cord to clip the big pieces down, just in case. As Mike Rowe used to say, 'Safety 3rd'.

just genius ! i peronaly use a soft rollup t. cover with a cargo net and some bungee cords but this is a elegant solution to where to put stuff in the bed. the options for decorative personalizations are endless as well

Gotta say as a guy that grew up in construction this is impressive. Not only how you did it but how the heck you came up with it. I love how different people’s brain works to solve a problem they see.
Well done. 👍

The white stuff is road salt.
The Peoples Republic of New York has a contract with the auto makers to destroy vehicles as fast as possible.
Same with Michigan. They have budgets of use it or lose it. So they buy way more salt than could ever be needed that way every year they can ask for more money. I live somewhat close to the road commission on one of the first back roads they come to. Every spring well after winter they drive up and down spraying salt all over. Just to get rid of it.
That way next year they can say they used it all and ask for a larger budget.

Very cool!

Just to put it out there, the Ridgeline has had a great version of this for a long time. I nearly bought one while waiting for my Maverick to come in. Frankly, after a year of ownership, I still might.
I wouldn’t say that out loud. Lol
People might get the wrong idea of you. 😋 I

What do you think you are, a Honda Ridgeline? LOL!

Very cool idea!

I could see a company taking this concept and making a more modular and streamline version. Something that could be stowed over the back seats.

Thank you. Should we start calling these adaptations and changes 'truck remodeling'? I'm game!

Some of what people come up with and post here is amazing.

Thank you.

With tonneau covers and 2x6's already available, I don't know if there's much of a market left. "Stuff leftover in the garage" hits a very very low price point - not much of a profit margin there!

I like it truck remodel.

I should build a house in the back just for the rumble or YouTube content. Not that I’m into that stuff but it’s Awsome to see guys do wacky things

Well look at that, ecoological makes an aerobox. It's not modular but it's for sale.

Hey if they ever make an EV Maverick you won't need the cooler space... you can just dump your ice and shrimp cocktails in the frunk :ROFLMAO:
Where will they put the big battery and electric motor?

I mean.. you're not *that* cheap, you do have an XLT and not XL. :)

Nice work. I'm curious if you will notice any difference in mpg on the interstate. You do with a tonneau cover, 1-2 mpg at 70+.
Can you clarify if you are getting a 1-2 mpg increase or decrease at 70+?

A tonneau cover increases 1-2 mpg at interstate speeds in my ecoboost. Do not know the effect for a hybrid.

There is a Ford engineering and marketing video where they explain tailgate aerodynamics and just in passing mention that tonneau covers slightly increase efficiency by reducing drag.
