Very stupid article. Yes, if you buy a Plug-In Hybrid vehicle and do not plug it in, you will use more fuel and emit more co2.
But that's the point. Real vehicle owners are not religiously recharging their electric vehicle at every possible opportunity. Its called real-world testing, not optimum-usage testing.

You can't blame it on the manufacturing if the users don't plug it in.

You have the same issue with families with both a BEV and an ICE vehicle that always take the ICE and leave the BEV parked on long trips since they don't want the hassle of finding charging stations along their route.

High revving, naturally aspirated, manual transmission.
Sounds like my 2018 Polaris Slingshot. Noisy, windy, dirty, no heat, no AC, no power brakes, no power steering. Punch it in second . . OFF WE GO. Fun on three wheels.
That does sound like fun. I have a car that is rwd, 6 SPD manual , naturally aspirated V6 right around 300 HP. I keep thinking about selling it for practical reasons but haven't brought myself to do it yet . If I do maybe I'll buy a more dedicated toy down the road.

You're exaggerating. Most don't need to plug in"at every opportunity". I live 3.7 miles from work so if a PHEV had 50 miles of range I could plug it in at home a few nights a week.

The Maveick is not a PHEV, you understand the difference, right?

The reason for the increased emissions is because owners are not plugging their PHEVs in at night, which the horribly written article never mentions.

Electric vehicles are smoother, more powerful, quieter, cheaper to own over their lifetime and more reliable than gasoline powered cars. They are better in almost every metric imaginable.

PHEVs are a stopgap compromise between purely gas and purely electric vehicles but eventually we'll be 100% electric for most smaller passenger travel.

I do find it comical that the OP posted this in the hybrid power train sub but doesn't understand that the Maverick is not a PHEV or electric vehicle. They just don't understand technology. Their lack of educstion is mildly amusing though, and shows why people have such a misconstrued idea on electric vehicles.
Love how you assume that basically anyone who talks about this stuff is stupid and uneducated.

OP just posted a link, he didn't state his opinions.

That kind of sanctimonious condescension is really, well, you know what it is. Trust the science, right?

I don't like condescension either but TBH if someone posts a story like that probably 9 out of 10 that story aligns with their opinion.

"Smoother"? is that a technical term that I don't understand?

"Quiter" - Therefore more dangerous!

"Cheaper"? - Absolutely false. There is no unbiased study showing that EVs are cheaper either upfront or over the lifetime of the vehicle. There are so many variables that a comparison such as this is almost impossible to make unless you compare two vehicles that are exactly the same except for the engine. Even then, the result would depend on the price of fuel during the comparison period.

The entire subject of EVs and global warming has become a religion, and it is almost always impossible to change someone's religious views because religion is based on faith, not facts.
Dude....

I had a Bolt EV for 6 years and drove it 65,000 miles.

I paid $30,000 and then I paid 3 cents per mile and the only supplies I ever bought for it was 1 set of tires and wiper fluid.

Zero visits to a dealer for problems.
There were two recalls that were taken care of and I was never inconvenienced.

Easy to charge and 100% reliable.

Then during the pandemic "shortage" I sold it for $20,000 when I got my Maverick in 2022.

I’m picking up a 2023 Escape PHEV for my wife next weekend, she’s been driving a CMax Hybrid, other than driving to our cottage on the highway she should be able stay electric 99% of the time.
We've had ours for 6 months now and it’s been fantastic. Huge discounts now ($17k here between incentives and Ford discounts).

We just picked it up last weekend. So far 17k off with another 4K from our provincial government in July if their budget gets approved.

and the majority of ICE vehicle owners never achieve the EPA rated MPG. So they are 'over-polluting' also.

Driving in stop and go traffic [this weekend] our Sienna hybrid was averaging 46 mpg (EPA rated 35/36). We were surrounded by vehicles of all sizes and shapes, with 90% of them getting worse mpg than we were. And gas is $5+/gal.

American consumers are not the brightest though, so we do need to mandate emission and efficiency standards.

Go test drive a Lightning...with a 100 mile range while towing. 🤣
Or line it up against mine that cost significantly less and will
Last longer more than likely. When you can beat a 11:6 1/4 mile and haul a trailer across country let me know all for under less cost than a lighting oh and I’m probably less of a carbon foot print cause it’s e85. So very little.

As the owner of a 2013 Volt, my experience with a PHEV is very good.

I get 120 mpg average, calculated as miles driven divided by fuel burnt. That, of course, ignores the fact that I plug it in every night, and the bulk of my driving is electric only.

What does that electricity cost me? I go about 35 miles on a dollar's worth of electricity, so it's a fair trade. When gas gets less than a dollar a gallon, I might consider not plugging it in.

About those tires - any difference in wear between it and other vehicles has not been noticed by me.

At 120k miles, the brakes look almost like new, they simply don't wear.

Oh, and in my case (not saying EVERY case), my electricity is about 98% renewables.

It works well for me, YMMV.
