Recently on a trip from South Florida to North Carolina I stopped at a BP gas station to refill my Maverick. I am aware what the manual says about overfilling a past the first click of the gas pump handle. Unfortunately the gas pump handles automatic cut off feature was not working properly. You had to keep holding the lever in order for the gas to flow. As a result the gas overflowed and Spilled onto the ground. I went inside and alerted the clerk what had happened and they told me the previous week someone had drove off with the hose still connected to the vehicle. So apparently the repair was not done properly. This caused my check engine light to come on and required me to take it into the dealer. I Googled the issue and found out some possible fixes for a stuck gas filler intake valve. I tried those and tried to clear the check engine light but it did not work and as a result I took it to the dealer. Now I am waiting on the part which they said will take about a week to get. Not happy as I had ceramic coated my truck and of course gas went all over the side of the truck and was only able to pour a bucket of water over the side of the truck later in the day. I think they should have used the old school regular gas cap to prevent this issue I'm guessing Ford is going to be replacing a lot of these gas filler valves

You're the first to post about having this trouble so, it seems pretty rare.

Please get details of the actual codes, and what was actually wrong and what the dealer actually replaced or repaired and post. Thanks in advance.

Basically all the new cars have that type of filler now. Just from memory if I remember the code on my scanner was p 2054 or 2051. They didn't give me any paperwork they just told me they ordered the part and they would expect him to get it in within a week and they would call me to set up another appointment to bring it in. It is the upper valve on the filler neck right at the top. It's not the purge valve which it could also affect that but it wasn't to purge valve. I'll post after I get back to the dealer in get the information from them

I try to estimate how much gas I'm in need of and stop around that but the auto cut off usually kicks in. I used to over fill my tank til I started getting the evap canister code. Its true what that sticker says on the fuel cap cover lol.
To the op you might just have to wait it out with the code. Give it a few more on off cycles or around 50 miles, Should clear up. Thats what I had to do and now no codes or issues.

Call DOT in state it happened They will come out and lock pump until it's properly repaired. May be a little late now but file a damage claim with BP station.

I suspect a "regular" cap would have done the same thing. They are designed to vent if needed. When there is no air in the tank from overfilling there is no room for expansion.

I've yet to see a modern car that still requires an internal gas cap to be removed, they're basically all like the maverick. It doesn't really seem to be the source of any widespread issues. I'm sorry about your experience, but it sounds like that's on the gas station for their faulty systems.

Glad I read this! I have been " topping off " my maverick for the last 7 months since I have owned it. Thankfully this hasn't happened yet.

SAE procedure is let it automatically stop, then restart only 2 more times. This does not constitute "topping off".

Depending on numerous factors there can be premature shut offs. But three shut offs, initial plus two more is trustworthy you have a full tank.

As mamma always said:
"One can be a fluke. Two can be a coincidence. Three times and you have a pattern."

I've been following this for the past 25 refuels, and no problems with my truck.

I had a similar thing happen to me. but I overfilled buy filling past the click and had to get a part replaced. One should never leave a pump unattended. Tank is 14 gallons.

Never "top off" a car, that's bad for any car, not just the maverick. Never run your car down to E either, that massively reduces the life of a fuel pump. I feel sketchy anytime I dip below 50 miles to E.

"Topping off" just results in gas fumes floating away and wasting your money. NO reason to do it.
