Oil life monitoring

Good day group. I bought a 2022 maverick lariat, 2.0 L ecoboost. On the fordpass app it has oil life monitoring. I'm wondering how accurate this is? And if its ok to trust the milage/time shown for rough oil change time? Or is it better to just look at dipstick level? Thank you for your help.

No idea how accurate the sensor is or if its even more than a timer. I always check the dipstick at least once a month so you can see the oil level and get an idea of how dirty it is. Oil life can vary a lot depending on driving habits. If you change every 5k you should be good. No harm in changing early but definitely harmful to change late.

It's basically just a timer and milage calculator no sensor is involved. With an Eco unless you do alot of long highway drives keep it to the lower end of the oil change intervals. Short drives and cold starts will lead to fuel dilution from the direct injection and turbo.

It is based on time and mileage, based on one year or 10,000 mile interval - up to you what schedule you want to follow, which vary greatly, LOL
p.s. I am a person who would rather change oil TOO MUCH, rather than not enough...

I'm in Canada, and haven't read my manual yet, so I'm wondering what's recommended oil intervals in km's. Ty for help and input!

If the engine is the same as the escapes, then it will have an intelligent oil life monitor, meaning it will come on sooner if a lot of "racing" or towing or lots of stop and go (non-hybrid), versus it will come on later if doing a lot of highway driving

Ford programs the oil life sensor on the safe side as it know the majority of it's customers are not mechanically inclined.

It's definitely not just based on mileage/time. I would imagine they program it to show more wear on the oil than it really has to be on the safe side.

Modern cars and modern oils last far longer than what most people think. Plus oil change quick lube places will hammer at the notion you need to change oil every 3000mi cause it helps business.

But today you can safely go 7000mi and usually that is lowball. Plus if you go with synthetic, 10k is not an unreasonable number unless you're constantly towing.

Also, be very sure you understand that the dipstick measures oil level. That's how much oil is in the engine. Check it at every fill-up until you're sure you're not using oil, then once a month.
Oil life is when you have to change the oil. Everyone has an opinion on this. In my case, I follow the manual, and if the oil life monitor in the dash instruments says it's used up, then I'll change it before the time in the manual.

My 2002 Accord says 7500 miles in the book. It has an engine design from the 1990s and is based on oil tech of that time.

Changing your oil at 3-5k on just about any modern vehicle sold in 2022 is not necessary.

These direct injected turbocharged motors require very diligent maintenance in my opinion. The turbo itself is spinning at what, a couple of hundred thousand rpms? Not only does it use oil for lubrication but in a way cooling as well to supplement the coolant plumbed to the turbo. Also, direct injection complicates things with oil because it atomizes the fuel and then compound that with higher volumes of blow by gasses going to the crankcase due to very high cylinder pressures and you get fuel in the oil, lowering its viscosity and flash point significantly. I suspect a lot of people have never owned a turbocharged motor but my experience with these Borg Warner turbos hasn't been great and replacement gets very expensive.

Despite being told that I can go 5k miles between changes I still change the oil in my tuned WRX every three thousand miles with Pennzoil platinum and 130k miles later the car still runs like a top with original everything. Between oil and filter I spend about 40 dollars every oil change. According to my math I've done an extra 17 oil changes over the factory recommended interval so extrapolate that out and I've spent an extra 680 dollars on maintenance which is totally worth it for peace of mind and wouldn't even cover the cost for a new turbo let alone the labor to replace a turbo.

Moral of the story? Change your oil often in the Ecoboost engines if you plan on having your Maverick for a while.
