The red (sorry yellow) flag is the two decimal places .02. WTF is this?

Trying to get the Pic attached!
Yes, I know about overfilling the crankcase and foaming of the oil which can lead to oil starvation in some plpicaces in the engine. Bad! I toom out a pint of oil, dipstick is where it should be a d all is right with the world. But I still can't get this damn Pic to show up in my post!
I can see the photo.

This is probably an old thread, but I have a question? Just did my first oil change pn my 24 lariet Hybrid. 4000 miles of enjoyable driving with zero problems. Great vehicle! Changed oil and filter and put in 6qt of 0W-20 0il. Checked the dipstick and it is really over filled! Now, under the hood written in white marker is the notation, 6.02 qt 0W-20 so I put on 6 in to refill. Dipstick says it's over filled! Manual says 5.5qt! Do I need to take out a pint or just leave it in? I'm confused! Please give me some input here. Thanks
A person also has to consider the use of a longer or shorter oil filter. I always fill with five Qts. start the engine next to assure the filter is full etc.. and then slowly add up to where the dip stick says full. Who cares what is in print to me this should only be taken as a guide line. Your dip stick is the real tell.

Probably was for the factory then, dry fill volume.
Or maybe they ran out of short filters that day and used the longer version, and this was the selected communication method for someone down the line.
I do wonder about the accuracy of .02 though - seems like someone got that wrong.

Just as wrong as trying to inform the new or next guy down the line what the quantity and weight is by this method of permanent marker.
Not thinking ahead very well to possible bad side effects.

With this kind of thinking - I'd be concerned they actually selected the correct alternate longer size, or looked up and read and mathed out the increased volume (.5 extra?).

I put in about 3/4 of litre (750ml) less then the manual states. I then start the engine and let it run at idle for 30 seconds, rev it a couple of times to 3-4K to make sure that the oil filter is filled. Shut it off and wait a few minutes (5) recheck the level and then slowly add oil to bring it up with where you want it on the dip stick.

I ,ve only been working on cars 60 years so read at your own risk!!
I,ve always just put the 1/2 quart extra in the engine and never had a problem.is it right, don’t know but never had one come back with a overfill problem.
Maybe 61 years, but I do the opposite in my 1985 Ranger. If I add the 6th quart as indicated, the truck will soon eat that oil and be back down to the lowest end of 'safe' hashmark. Somehow it does not like what the factory says it should have. Could be that the manual was set for the 'cast aluminum' oil pan, while mine is stamped. Been that way since new.

Yes I know how to change oil in cars and trucks! But when it is in bold big print right out front 6.02Qt 0W-20 underlined. It gets your attention! I'll drain out a pint or so and move on. Thanks
No big deal what you did. You did what you thought was right based on the marking.

I seen shops showing how to do an oil change on you tube. The guy at dealer said no big deal because he went 4 oz over.

I would open the drain plug and drop a few oz.s and then check the dip stick and see what you get and adjust accordingly if needed.

On my first oil change 22 FX4 dealer put to much oil probity 6 qts it was 3/4 of a inch over on dip stick, I went back next day and they removed it to correct level. dealers don't use there best guys for oil changes and tire rotations, that guy learned the hard way, now when I go I always mention to adviser its 5.5 gts and they put it on the RO. Always check your oil level after oil change at any shop.

Go by manual, run for 5 minutes, let sit 1/2 hour, ck dipstick, and judge from there. I tested Toyota engines for 15 +years and that is the true way to tell. Hope this helps.

In my opinion, you absolutely have to remove the excess.

Overfilling your car's engine oil can lead to a variety of issues, including:

  • Oil Foaming: Excess oil can be whipped into a frothy foam by the spinning crankshaft, reducing its lubricating ability and potentially leading to engine damage.

  • Increased Oil Pressure: The extra oil can cause excessive pressure within the engine, potentially leading to leaks or seal failures.

  • Reduced Engine Efficiency: The increased friction from the foamy oil can decrease engine performance and fuel economy.

  • Oil Leaks: The higher pressure can force oil past seals and gaskets, leading to leaks and potential damage to surrounding components.

  • Engine Damage: In severe cases, overfilling can lead to engine failure due to lack of proper lubrication and increased heat.

5.7 quarts and an empty new filter in my hybrid gets me to exactly the full line. What do you know, the print was right on the money 😂

You are absolutely right.
Remove the excess!

Much ado about nothing. Yes. You should have gone by the owner's manual . But it's understandable that you figured the writing under the hood was accurate. Can overfilling cause problems? Yes. But will overfilling a 5.7 qt system by less than 1/2 QT cause those problems? No. Would I have drained the excess? In a customer's vehicle, yes. In my own vehicle, no. The dirty little secret is that most engines that hold 5 qts or more can tolerate up to qt before any foaming or other effects of overfilling occurs. Why did someone write 6.02 qts in yellow markings? I don't know and will never know. But the folks warning of doom and gloom based on 5 oz or less worry too much in my opinion. The manufacturers don't advertise it. But they know some people will round to the nearest qt.
