OIL Change Discrepancy

Hey All... Just wondering...Has this been a problem? I went to there dealer to get my 1st of 2 free oil changes and when I took a look at the work sheet when I got home I noticed that they had put in 5W- oil when on the oil cap it says 0W-?
I called into my service advisor and he said that it what it called for when he put in the VIN #

Any ideas why that would be?

I mean it's right on the oil cap.

Change it out when you hit -20° temperature.

What? You never do?
Then you're fine. The second number is the most important one.

0w-20 and 5w-20 are going to behave the same in above frigid temperatures.

And before someone tries to "correct" me (you know who you are) by behaves the same I mean there is no meaningful difference and no sensible difference.

Did you keep reading to see what type of oil they used?
Have your manual out for the spec'd.

0W makes cold starts easier on the starter. Draws less amps by a small fraction.
No big deal.
Most won’t keep their mavericks for a quarter million miles anyway.
Where it might make a difference.

I have a question. Since they screwed up the weight. Did they use Full Synthetic or a CHEAPER BLEND? ( Do you have any documentation stating what the "free" oil changes include?)
My Maverick hybrid is a 2023. The manual calls for full synthetic as I show below. I do not believe there were any engine changes between 2023 and 2025 2.5L hybrid engines.
You may want to check your manual.

0W weight helps with cold starts, but is also used for better mileage.
That is the reason manufacturers have started using 0W oil.

Agree it shouldn't matter until cold weather, but you have to ask yourself why would a tech not double check the oil spec when the VIN lookup returned a different value than that on the filler cap (and I assume the shop manual). I know oil changes are entry level work, but that inattention to detail (or really low give-a-sh!t factor) is hard to excuse.

The "free" oil changes are probably from their big barrel of discounted 5W-30 synthetic blend used in a majority of vehicles.
Unless you pay an upcharge, likely mentioned in tiny footnote print in your paperwork.

If the service manager really did a VIN lookup that said 5W-??? was acceptable, probably their personal database for exactly this purpose of using the cheapest stuff for the free changes.

For warranty reasons - keep that paperwork.

Yeah, agree with others....the oil is less of a problem than what this issue says about the dealer. I would find a new servicing dealer if I were you, or DIY if you are capable.

At my last oil change I noticed the RO said they put 5w-20 oil instead of 5w-30 in my Ecoboost. I checked with the service advisor and he billed the wrong oil.

The tech's hand written notes showed the correct oil as did the service label he printed and put on the windshield.

Since the OP has a Hybrid, did they use 5W-20 or 5W-30? - The 5W-30 is the oil for the 2.0 Turbo, and I'd have them change it again and put 0W-20, the correct spec for the Hybrid, which starts/stops constantly while driving.

Yes, there's little difference in 5W vs 0W, IF they used 20 weight oil, other than the 0W will flow a tiny bit quicker than the 5W when cold. Even then, I'd have mixed feeling knowing the Hybrid rarely gets more than 2-3 bars on the temp gauge, even in the 90 degree temps we've been having.

Perhaps the OP can specify whether that 5W-? refers to 5W-20 or 5W-30 on the receipt.

Ford oil spec for the 2.5L hybrid engine, WSS-M2C962-A1, is specific to 0W-20 oil.
You will only find 0W-20 oil that meets this Ford specification.
