Ranchero was a regular car front end, single row seat, with a Wagon rear end made into a pickup. Not the same thing at all.

A study group of mostly 20 something aged people were asked what name they liked, and they chose Maverick.

Ford didn't realize what age group would really buy this little truck. Most Maverick Buyers are old enough to remember the Maverick car.

Also the Maverick name was used on an offshore SUV and Truck around 1990. So it's still relevant.

I still like thinking my Maverick could easily have been named a Ranchero.
I think the marketing department liked the Maverick definition of " behaving differently from what is usual or expected" vs. the Ranchero definition of being "one who owns or works on a ranch".

Considering they are built in Mexico, we're lucky they didn't name it the "Burrito".
You can call your trucklett anything you like.

BTW - When prepping to repaint a Ford Falcon, we took off all the chrome lettering and considered renaming it the RACOON, but didn't.

I think Ranchero would be a fine name. Maverick works too, but back in the day, Maverick was a cute sedan. Ranchero was the car/truck mix.

This has been brought up before, but still, I think about it occasionally.

Of course, Ford made the model T and model A in both car and truck configurations. I still like thinking my Maverick could easily have been named a Ranchero.
Maybe too close to the Ranger name?

My father, and I have had this conversation several times. I am 53, and when I think of Ranger I think of a small utilitarian truck. In my mind that Nameplate would have been more suited for the Maverick we all currently own. The current Ranger in my mind is just a smaller F150.

I agree that when I think of Maverick I think of the 70’s car initially. I am sure there is some reason the powers that be at Ford when this route, but I believe they should have named the Maverick a Ranger instead.

While we are on Mexican names, "Burro" would be ideal for this truck, relating to the definition.

Where should I mount it?

I would like to somehow replace the stamped in Maverick in the tailgate with Ranchero. Probably not worth the time, money and effort.
Hmmm, now that I think about it a body shop might be able to replace the Maverick with Ranger. Next time I'm going by my local Ford dealer I'm going to measure the Ranger tailgate stamping. Might be doable for not crazy money.

I agree with the idea of Ford not expecting it to be so popular with seniors. They originally saw it as a starter new vehicle for 20 to 30 YOs. But us seniors needed a cheap new vehicle also. KIA did the same with the Soul and it is also very popular with seniors.

Wasn't particularly taken with Maverick, even less so Ranchero. Why they felt the need to recycle an irrelevant old model name escapes me. But everything old is new again, I guess.

According to the local Duck Duck Go robot, "the tailgate width of the Ford Maverick is approximately 50 inches, while the Ford Ranger's tailgate width is about 62inches."
Not likely to work...

Well, Ford doesn't seemed to be bothered by that. Thinking Escape, Explorer, Expedition, and Excursion. I'm almost surprised they didn't do it.

Yeah, my post was kind of tongue in cheek, I know the Ranger tailgate is much wider. Just spit balling here, lol
