I’m looking at a Lariat or an XLT with a towing package. Do I need to get a towing package on a lariat? I’m wanting to tow a 2500-3000 camper around the country but don’t want to pay for gas mileage on a big truck on a day to day basis. I’m new to the forum. I see others recommend a bigger truck but some say a turbo boost will do the job.

Eco boost 4k will do the job. But a bigger truck will do it better. I'm sure there's going to be a lot of opinions on this. Mav gets great gas mileage by itself. Towing expect half. Where a bigger truck will loose less mileage. 23 f550 lariat gets almost the same fuel economy towing 26k as my maverick towing 3.5k. Around 13mpg mav.
11 mpg 550. Remember about the gear that you're going to have while circumventing the country. You're probably going to be maxed out.

I pull a Scamp trailer, weighing 2900 pounds when fully loaded, with my EcoBoost 4K tow package. I get 21 mpg when traveling on flat roads with little wind. With windy conditions (wind greater than 20 mph), I will get 18 mpg. I have not towed in the mountains yet, I imagine the mpg will dip to 11-12 mpg based on other reports from MTC members.

If OP wants to tow you should get the tow package regardless if its a XLT or Lariat.
I tow a car trailer with an MG, total weight is 4,000 lbs so am at the limit and get 17-18 mpg but it's not a camper. No trailer I average 27 overall. My EB tows the trailer like it's not even there on flat ground and barely breathes hard on big hills so very happy.
Agree if towing more than 4k then a bigger truck like a Ranger would be better.

I towed the trailer and sled below for approx 300 miles at 60-70mph and averaged 15.1 mpg the whole trip. Weight was not a major consideration(~1500lbs?), but I believe poor aerodynamics may have been part of my fuel mileage. The rear ramp has to be a major wind catcher.

The 2.0 engine had plenty of power. That actually impressd me. Hunting between gears on minor inclines was irritating, but probably expected. My past experience has always been with big V8's or diesels, so those have more torque and hold the gear better.

I wasn't blown away with it's towing ability, but was also not disappointed. I do have the 4k package.

Does not matter if you have the Lariat or XLT. Get the 4K tow package comes with the upgraded trans cooling, and lower gears.
I only tow 2k but went with the 4K package anyway, it's good insurance IMHO

Not towed with my Mav yet, but towed my clamshell snowmobile trailer with 2020 Escape for 4 years setting cruise at 75 on the interstate with zero issues. New trailer is 400+ heavier and has a larger frontage area hence why I brought Mav. (tow capacity is 500lbs heavier than Escape). Mileage has been as low as 13mph. So, towing weight you say should be no problem with tow package.

everything you said is true, but it doesn't necessarily match to what the OP stated.

a maverick ecoboost with 4k towing can definitely tow 2500-3000 without issues and leave room for cargo (including people) against the gross vehicle weight. and it'll get better mileage and be easier to daily drive due to size alone, compared to a Ranger or F150.

a maverick hybrid with 4k towing probably can do it too. that's what I'm curious to see the next few months, someone (possibly TFL?) doing some real towing tests with the hybrid 4k.

I never planned to put anything on my 2.0 EB hitch but a bike rack. Then I had a need to haul a 16 ft trailer with furniture. My worry that the Mav really being a passenger SUV drive train with a cosplay lightweight unibody shaped like a truck would get pushed around by the trailer was pleasantly proved to be unfounded! The Mav+trailer pulled through freeway traffic and even passed semi trucks on two lanes with great ease! I got only 15 mpg while towing, likely due more to wind drag than trailer weight. In my opinion the tow package lower gearing is unnecessary. However, electric trailer brakes or surge brakes are vital for such a light tow vehicle or any trailer that weighs more than 50% of the towing vehicle. If I towed often I would get an F-150 because heavy loads and high wind drag will significanly add wear to the small transmission, CV joints, etc. Probably half gas mileage means double wear on the drive train.
