Maverick Hybrid electric mode limited

I am happy to say I am nearing my 2nd full week in my new Maverick Hybrid. I do love driving it. But I do want to know if anyone feel like the all electric mode is only working up to 35mph max coupled with no or minimal slope change and very low acceleration or it goes into hybrid gas assist mode? I am seeing this in the AM when not too hot, in Eco mode, and as I said babying the accelerator. Please share my fellow Hybrid Maverickians.

Takes very little acceleration and speed to get out of "all electric" mode. Also, at times the ICE will run to charge the battery if needed, especially if not driven regularly. I'm getting 45mpg or more in town and about 35-37mpg hiway at 70-80mph. I only use the "normal" mode that is the default on start up.

It’s rather hard to stay exclusively on battery only acceleration on roads above 25mph. Driving normally and accelerating gently (but relatively normally) will easily turn on ICE to provide primary acceleration power when accelerating from a stop, or staying at speed up even a gentle incline, etc. That’s all normal.

One thing you can do though is once youre up to speed, make sure you let off the pedal enough to touch regen brake level, then immediately press it back to “gentle” zone. That’s how you can try to make sure the ICE turns off when you’re coasting/cruising as much as possible at city speeds. This might not be necessary but in my mind it seems to be more consistent when I’m paying attention to gentle driving style.

If you’re trying to “force” staying in battery only acceleration by going relatively slow, then you’ll have an ironic effect of seeming to have the ICE kick in more often when you wouldn’t expect, since it needs to recharge the HVB.

As far as the 35 MPH limit that you've seen, I've read reports that it is possible to get electric mode to kick in at freeway speeds (60 or 70 maybe, but there is a limit, I don't know what that upper limit is), but only for maybe 0.2 miles, if you ease off the accelerator and gently tip in after regen starts.

Remember that other than brake regen, the Maverick is not an EV, and any battery power it expends has to be recovered by running the gas engine. The battery is also very small, maybe 1.1 kWh usable. It's good for maybe a mile at lower speeds, but due to wind resistance and extra power demands, it's good for significantly less at higher speeds.

You can toggle on the EV coach and brake coach on your instrument cluster. If you want more insight into the hybrid system, you can hook up a bluetooth OBD2 adapter to your phone, via an app like Torque Pro. It will let you see live data from the vehicle. Among the however many possible parameters, it can show HV battery SoC, current regen amount, and things like that. I think that Torque Pro is also compatible with Android Auto, so it can display on the infotainment screen.

Accelerate up to speed then very briefly take foot off the accelerator them reapply accelerator to maintain speed. You will now be in electric mode.

Tim had an early video showing how to do this.

There is no “electric mode” for the Maverick hybrid. you can drive/cruise on the battery at different points, but their is no “electric mode”.

I do the same, letting up on the accelerator on level ground or slight incline to get the ICE to kick off and slight accel to hold speed works great. I only use "normal" driving mode.

I feel that you are nit-picking.

The Hybrid Maverick does say ALL ELECTRIC in the display when running on battery only so when it says that you are running in "electric mode".

We're now averaging 49.4mpg after ~3100 miles (so we drive quite conservatively, the wife, much less so), and this is definitely our experience.

So what does the drive modes actually do on a CVT? Usually the drive mode change when the Tranny shifts to higher gears.

No, I am not picking nits. I have been driving this engine set (Atkinson) set up since 2007 with a Toyota Camry that has north of 370k miles… the electric motor is an assist. It works well improving mpg but it does not have an electric mode. See attached video

Still has an electric mode, even the displays says electric. This is how the OP is referring to the electric motor which makes sense
