I think I am draining the 12v battery by leaving a key fob in the vehicle… a day After a rear end collision that fortunately was just a small car rolling into my hitch receiver… several warning messages appeared like “pre collision sensor not activated” and “hill detection deactivated” … I took it in thinking the computer had been banged up or some sensor was slipping into crash mode… it took them three days to run tests and only determine that the battery was low… one day’s worth was an overnight charging then testing… after I questioned a $500 replacement battery I got the battery free from yhe repair warranty from some famous recall…

After all that, I happened to mention that I keep a key in the truck and use the keypad to lock and unlock it.

according Todd the dealership repair manager the fob is continuously connecting regardless of whether I locked the doors with the keypad… and draining the battery so they were extremely nice by honoring the waranty…

so much for my scheme of not having to carry the key with me…

I keep my spare key (non-push start) in my glove box. It has been there for over 2 years. I have not had any battery drain issues.

Thanks. I just took my Fob out of my truck! It’s so huge to carry around! Glad that all worked out for you.

I did a bunch of testing and found leaving the key inside did not effect battery drain in any appreciable manner.

If someone breaks in with the key inside the vehicle they'll obviously be able to drive it off. I doubt your insurance will cover it in this case. Big difference between loss of a window replacement vs loss of the whole vehicle.

1: in case I am out and I lose my key.
2: people like to borrow the Maverick and it is easier to give them the keypad code to get the key to borrow it.

I could count the number of people I would let borrow my vehicle on one hand, and pick my nose (both sides) and offer a one fingered salute simultaneously!

Once let a co-worker borrow my car to go get some lunch. He decided to go pick up his girlfriend, went out joyriding (it was a 1967 VW convertible bug) and came back with the passenger side door caved in. It happened in a parking lot which is considered private property so not subject to the same traffic rules. He and the woman that hit him each offered me $100, which was nowhere near enough to fix it. A lawyer told me I would have to sue them individually, which at the time wasn't worth it. That was the last time I lent a vehicle to anyone.

Truck is looking for a fob signal 24x7 whether your fob is there or not.

Keyless entry fob is going to sleep in minutes with no movement.

Fob isn't "connecting" with anything.

I went a long time without a truck because I couldn’t afford one, but I had good friends who let me borrow all the time. So I now return the favor whenever I can.

I've helped friends move stuff all the time with the trucks and vans I've had over the years, but I don't let them borrow the vehicle without me as the driver.

Todd is a moron. You had a defective 12v battery, which is why Ford issued a recall. Keep doing what you were doing.

My buddy once gave me his truck for 2 weeks while I was doing construction at my house. Every situation is different.

As others have stated, the key fob has an accelerometer. It goes to sleep if not moving for a few minutes. This is a security feature to prevent hacking into your truck on top of the encrypted algorithms.

Also, the receiver on the truck that is looking for a signal doesn't use that much power, like a few milliamps at most. Even assuming it uses the entire 12volts, that means the 70AH AGM would last almost three years looking for a fob assuming that is all it ever does without being topped off by a drive.

Of all the phantom power draws, that one is not causing the issue.
