I ordered my new XLT Eruption Green with the keypad and the dealer didn't install it so I have to make an appointment to have it done. The salesman said there'd be no charge because it was his error but that remains to be seen.

As for the keypad; I assume it's to allow you to leave the keys in the vehicle but if that's my naive assumption, wouldn't a would-be thief think the same and break the window knowing the keys are in it?
I think it’s so someone can get into your truck, who knows the code, when they don’t have the key.

Here's a good example where the keypad came in handy, on my Ford Explorer Sport Trac.
My wife and I were hiking around Mount Evans Colorado 14,000' a group of us guys decided to hike up higher towards the Observatory area. A freak storm moved in with small hail and lightning you could tell lightning was coming because you could feel and hear the static in the air, it didn't have far to travel as we were in the clouds. I had the keys to the truck in my pocket but, my wife knew the code to the keypad. My wife and a few other women took shelter in my truck.

No shelter on the top of the mountain. At the time there weren't toilets built.
The Visitor Center had burnt down years earlier from a lightning strike. It has not been rebuilt. The open shell is still there.

Nope. They've had them standard for decades on Fords, but statistically Hyundai and Kia are more often stolen which don't have a keypad.

For MYs 2004 through 2014, the established median was 3.5826 thefts per 1,000 vehicles produced. In that time the 09 Shelby GT (5 thefts in 581 produced), the 06 Taurus, and the 04 Mustang were the only Ford's to be stolen at a higher rate than average. I don't think any of those models had the keypad standard (I thought it was trucks and SUV's though it might have been on the Taurus...). And looking at ones I know had the keypad, they seem quite low.

On my old F150 where it was standard, we mostly used it if I or my wife took something the other person wanted when we left for work and we could swing by and punch in the code and get it. Or when I was outside and needed to get something out of my truck, or put in it I could just do that rather than run back in the house for the keys.

On my Maverick, sure the main reason was so I can leave the keys in it too when I am biking or going for a run. And yes, if someone realizes my intent, and figures they can find my keys, break in during the day, etc etc.... But statistically there is no correlation to vehicle theft rates and the keypads.
I resently read an article, that the vehicle most stolen in america is a 2006 F-150. More then half the states reported.

I just traded in my 2022 Maverick Lariat, which I ordered, for a 2025 lariat . My dealer found the 25 on another lot nearby. I did not have to order it. The 22 was equipped with a keypad but the 25 was not. I wanted to order a keypad for my 25 but was told at this time Ford was saving those keypads for only customers that ordered a 25 Maverick. Since I didn’t order my new 25 Maverick then ,at this time, the keypad isn’t available to me. After spending $75000 on these two trucks it seems a little ridiculous.
Just order it from your local ford dealer parts dept. That’s how I got mine and had them install and program it
