I took delivery of my Ecoboost Mav three months ago, and have been very been pleased. But, just today, I've had a little hiccup that I'm thinking a forum member might be able to save me a little time with. The exterior temperature stopped displaying (which triggers a check engine light, because the auto start/stop can be tied to this somehow). I'm really guessing, because of the newness of the vehicle, that a connection just rattled loose -- anyone know where I can look for this under the hood? I'd love to check the connection myself before having to set up an appointment and take it to my dealer! Maybe someone has already experienced a similar problem?

Shoot! I’m really sorry to hear about this. Best of luck. Unfortunately I have no clue where the connection is

Greg, this sounds like a warranty issue to me. Call the dealership and make an appointment to get it looked at.

If you are wanting to try a DIY approach though. Try disconnecting the negative terminal on your battery for ten minutes.

Seriously, if you look under the hood but don't see anything obvious, just call the dealer. This sounds like the kind of esoteric problem that the service people are better prepared to deal with.

The temperature sensors I've seen on other vehicles are at the back of the grill. But it's best to just make an appointment with your service department for warranty repair.

On an Escape it is located on the lower front fascia on the passenger side. You will probably have to take the front fascia off to get to it. Not 100% sure on this

https://www.roadmasterinc.com/pdfinst/524465-4.pdf

page 8 mentions it

i would take it in

Most of the new Ford vehicles have the outside air temperature sensor inside the passenger mirror. I am not sure if the parts diagrams are online at Motorcraft yet but when they are it is a great resource for finding stuff.

Edit: It looks like it clips to something so more than likely underhood on the Mav. I could not find any assembly diagrams but this is what the part looks like at parts.ford.com.

I agree with the other posters, this seems like a dealership issue. You don't want to start messing around with anything that could make a dealer not want to cover a repair under warranty.

That being said, that Ambient Air Temp sensor is behind the lower half of the grille, just off to the passenger side. Officially, the bumper cover has to come off to access it. There's the connector on the sensor and a second bulkhead connector for the front bumper harness (AAT sensor and the marker lights) inside the Pass front wheel well.

That's got me curious. What other Ford vehicles? The passenger side door mirror seems like a very odd placement for a temperature sensor. There's little airflow in there since the only ventilation is the gap around the mirror glass.

The Super Duty has had it in the mirrors since 2011, the F150 since about 2017, The Focus, Escape, CMax have had the sensor under the mirror since 2012/2013 respectively. The sensor is actually under the mirror housing, in direct airflow.

Having the sensor there makes it less susceptible to the heat coming off of the radiator and condenser when the vehicle is stopped.

Have you tried disconnecting the battery for about a half hour to an hour then reconnect to see if all goes back to normal?

Sounds like I've got a good strong consensus just to take it in to my dealer -- which I've got an appointment to do! Thanks for the input, folks. I'm sure not comfortable removing the front fascia to troubleshoot this problem. Just thought it might be somewhere easily accessible that I could wiggle a wire on . . . but I'm not prepared to do what it sounds like it would take to reach the sensor.

I'm having a outside air display issue on my Hybrid XLT as well. Recently, the computer downloaded and installed over the air a software update G1.8.0.1_RC15_R21461a. I'm not sure what this update was addressing but since then, the Infotainment display has been real glitchy. The temp display has locked at 37f. The backup camera is on going forward for a short period and the display locks up and is unresponsive. I've checked for more updates over the air but that process is iffy at best. I'm heading to the dealer today for some more information. I haven't tried a master reset yet but we'll see what the dealer says.

My CEL just came on and the temp says “——“

what was the final resolution to this from your dealer? New sensor or broken wires somewhere?

and I assume this means the Auto climate control will not work now. The AAT is needed for Auto climate to function properly and read the outside temps.
