Data kind of paints a different picture with rates of those 70 and older on par with 16-30 years old's with those in the 85> range having the worst rates of all age demographics.I'm an awful lot more mindful of people who just got their license than someone who has been driving for over 60 years. It shows in the insurance rates as well as accident rates.
Older drivers only appear safer in the aggregate because there is less of them on the road.
