Back two or three centuries ago when people cut coins into 8 pieces (to make smaller change) the original term "bit" referred to one of those pieces. A Spanish dollar was called a piece of eight (all 8 bits), so “two bits” meant a quarter of a dollar. So your coin was worth 2 bits, not a bit more than quarter.

Yes your right about those Spanish pieces of eight. Great fun watching metal detector enthusiasts on YouTube run up and down an old colonial or early antebellum plantation paths from the homestead down to where the river landing was years ago and come across these.

By a bit more though I actually meant like 26 or 28 cents.
