A new update.

Less than 50miles later, I lost engine power again. Dropped the truck at the dealer again.

Ford's Buy Back team is "still reviewing my case". My lawyer is looking into any legal action under Lemon Laws.

Very... I was planning on keeping the truck after the last fix. I was willing to give Ford the benefit of the doubt and assume the issue was a hiccup during manufacturing. But clearly there's deeper issues here and I can't have a brand new vehicle where I have to constantly worry about losing engine power, especially on longer trips.

This is my first and likely last Ford vehicle

FWIW your issue sounds like the same one that many experienced after the older botched recalls. The new recall to fix the recall I've heard has been OK.

tl;dr it is a software issue that is fixed now.

That's what I thought too, but the truck has had all the recalls completed. And believe the dealer also re-flashed and updated everything again previously.

Was this recently as in, in the past two weeks? IIRC the updated recall, recall came out at the beginning of June.

Also possible the dealer f'd up. You never know.

From what I'm reading the timing chain did not fix your issue and was a pointless repair?

I would get rid of the vehicle as well, as they had to remove the engine and for this on an almost brand new car. The key here is you cannot trust it - and goes against the entire reason of buying a brand new car.

Before you throw Ford out with the bathwater however, look what is happening to the Tundra motors (they're grenading).

Ford's 2.5l hybrid powertrain has been incredibly reliable, that is the least of the worries on the Maverick IMO.

It's been at a dealer for nearly 1.5months now. I also specially ask that all recall updates be done last time I dropped off.... But I guess there's a chance they just didn't do it haha. Although I doubt that wouldn't be the first thing the Ford Engineers would've tried.

From where I stand now, it looks like the timing chain work was pointless. There's a chance I could be convinced to get another maverick, I know the platform is tested, generally reliable, and the Mav is just the best utilitarian vehicle in NA.... But I really don't feel comfortable keeping my current truck. I feel that I bought a new vehicle, there's no reason I should need major repairs at under 17k miles.

We'll see how Ford's buy back team responds. They are supposedly going to make a decision on my claim this week.

I think you just need a new Maverick. Lemons happen. FORD makes the most because they make the most.... ya know? Hopefully the buy back situation plays out and you get into something reliable soon.

Update:

Ford has denied my buy back claim, noting that I don't meet my state's requirements (5k miles over). The CS representative gave further contact info if I wish to escalate.

Dealer called and said they have it on the lift now, but no update until tomorrow.

On these motors, neither the cam gears or the harmonic balancer are keyed. The are fixed by a one time use bolt and an industrial diamond coated washer. The tensioner is hydraulic. If these parts were installed correctly in the manufacturing process, it is highly improbable that any of them would fail at the 20k point. I have rebuilt several of these motors with no issues. This is a extraordinarily improbable failure mode.
The ICE is actually a Ford / Mazda design that is 20+ years old. It has been a reliable engine since around 1999, and many including me have had this engine on the Ford Escape. Mazda still uses a variant of this engine on the Mazda 3 and other models. The tranny is based on a AISIN / Toyota design. So both the engine and tranny are collaborations with well known and highly thought of companies.

I'll vote for not being ice but sensor and/or harness BUT since Ford knows codes?

Dealer called with an update.

Apparently Ford is now replacing the entire 'long block'. So basically, they are replacing the entire engine.

Ford has denied my escalation of my buy back claim , they will not reverse their decision. I'm weighing my legal options now with my lawyer. It's becoming extremely frustrating

What are Carvana, Carmax, dealer buyback numbers? With high resale values consider getting this Maverick off your plate without the longer and expensive attorney process of lemon buyback.
