So my 2023 XLT Hybrid has a battery drain issue. In only 7 weeks of ownership / 2,000 miles I've had numerous "deep sleep" notifications and 2 completely dead batteries which required a jump (I used my NOCO GB40 - but have since upgraded to the Hulkman 8.5) to get started. My truck is currently AT the dealership for the 2nd time because the technician wanted to replace the Battery Control Module (I might have that term slightly wrong) because after they dropped in a new 12V last week, the problem still kept persisting and I was forced to bring my truck back to the service department.

Here are my ideas for 'solutions' to the parasitic drain, assuming the dealership is unable to 100% resolve the issue. I don't want to be negative, but it really appears that for MOST of the reports on here, despite numerous interventions by Ford, the issue is never quite resolved. Thus, I want to be proactive and perhaps mitigate the issue as best I can. The alternative is worse for me....getting rid of the Maverick and paying more / dealing with locating a new vehicle. I waited 17 months for this truck and I still LOVE it.

I'd love input or ideas, many of these quasi-solutions come from interactions and/or posts from members of this forum:

1) Upgrade my 12V battery by installing a 'beefier' alternative to the factory Motorcraft - that will still fit the under-seat dimensions
  • Duralast Gold Battery T4-DLG Group Size 99 470 CCA ($220)
2) Purchase a Direct Mount battery maintainer to leave under the hood
  • Noco Genius2D ($40)
3) Get myself a traditional, plug-in battery maintainer for parking in front of my house
  • Noco Genius 5 ($70)
4) Buy a 12V Solar Trickle/Maintainer for any camping trips or long weekends out in nature
  • Eco-Worthy 10W Solar Panel ($40)
5) Continue to carry with my Hulkman 2000A Battery Jumper as back-up
  • Hulkman 8.5 2000A boost pack ($125)

I understand that a brand new vehicle should NOT require this much pre-caution, but, I would still rather try to enjoy this truck to its fullest potential. Perhaps THIS time my dealership will solve the problem, I would love to be proven wrong. I still carry a voltage meter and will continue to monitor this issue.

I am not not married to any of these particular brands or models, but from my research ....it seems that all of these would provide a possible safety net to hopefully keep the parasitic drain problem at bay. I would love any input or suggestions before I go and make these purchases.

Other hacks that I have been trying with (unfortunately) no success.
  1. Did a BMS reset (high beams + brakes) after getting a new 12V battery from Ford
  2. Park far from my house to prevent my truck and key fob from "talking" to one another
  3. Keep my key inside a faraday bag to prevent any possible signal chat
  4. Turned off / Unpaired all FordPass data from within my truck screen settings
  5. Driving in "Low" mode for the last 5-10 minutes of every drive
My issue was finally resolved by shutting off everything including bluetooth and wifi and locking my keys in a metal box and I haven't had the power drain since. Each morning I just click bluetooth back on. I also got rid of ford pass and wifi connection for automatic updates

Howdy, the Duralast battery or the Diehard flavor I installed in my 'Hybrid Battery Replacement" thread are not really 'beefier', they are same physical size, same vent, and same specs as the OEM Motorcraft battery, and they are all T4 batteries.

I've had a number of Motorcraft batteries in the last few years that failed very early and I question whether the replacement your dealer used was any better, or whether they charged it prior to installation. That's why I chose a Diehard with a fresh build date in order to rule 'Motorcraft battery' out of my equation. And mine has been problem free for ~7 weeks now after going into Deep Sleep every ~3 days for 6-7 months and me charging the battery each time.

Your problem may be different from mine, although I experienced ~2 dozen Deep Sleep issues with no interior lights, etc. and charged overnight each time, my truck never failed to start.

I'd also be curious of the manufacture date on your 'new' replacement battery..

Good luck!!

.
Question:

What use (or harm) might come from installing a Battery Disconnect Switch on the negative post of my 12V battery? I spent some time camping the last few days and decided to just disconnect the terminal myself with a 10mm. But this got me thinking that I could also just install a battery disconnect as a quicker option for when I'm out in the middle of nowhere.

I realize it's not ideal, at all...but, having seen the last 4 nights of being able to just disconnect the negative and preserve my full battery charge, it was a useful "solution". Something like a simple knife blade disconnect for quick access -

Has anybody had their dealer fix the deep sleep mode/dead battery issue WITHOUT having to disable FordPass and automatic updates? I have a ‘23 hybrid with 2600 miles and just started having this same issue. Multiple “deep sleep mode” notifications in the past few days, and it was totally dead this morning (battery measured 1v).

I’d like to find an actual fix that didn’t involve disabling features on my new vehicle.

A new Diehard battery absolutely resolved my issues... it may not be everyone’s fix

Hi there, I'd be happy to look into your Maverick concerns on my end. Will you send us a message with your VIN and dealership info? I can look into things on my end.

Since no one has responded on this, I'll take a stab at it. Keep in mind that I'm NOT an expert - I just read a lot.

There is a huge difference between how the 12V battery is used on the Maverick Hybrid and on "regular" vehicles. Installing a cut-off switch on a regular car causes issues that are annoyances at best (losing your pre-programmed radio stations, sometimes returning some of the "settings" to factory defaults, etc.

In a Hybrid Maverick, the 12V battery supplies power for all the computers that manage all the different systems in your truck, INCLUDING the Battery Management System that supplies recharge power to the 12V battery from the HVB (via the inverter). Your BMS would lose its mind (literally erasing its memory), requiring a BMS "reset" procedure (minimum 12 hours) before it would be able to reliably charge your 12V battery again.

There is no way in hell that I personally would install such a switch in my Maverick Hybrid. Since I park in my garage, I would install an intelligent battery maintainer (as others have suggested) to the positive "jump" point under the hood, and grounded to somewhere on the vehicle's frame. That would keep the battery charged to optimal. If I had to park outside, away from an outlet, I would use a 12V solar charger (again - the "intelligent" type that won't over-charge the battery) to do keep it charged.

But I'm beginning to think that it's the Ford Motorcraft brand batteries that are at the root of the reported Deep Sleep problems. I've been fortunate (probably got one of the "good" batch of batteries), and have not had the Deep Sleep issue, even when left parked outside in 15ºF temps for 3-4 days over Christmas. I do, however, carry a jump pack in all my vehicles. Thus far, I've only used them to start my diesel tractor and zero-turn mower. I have, however, used them to help other stranded motorists, and it's in my Maverick "just in case" I ever need it.

🤓 I would suggest dividing the problem in half. Is it a charging issue as mentioned in another thread or is it a drain issue. A continuous aux battery power monitor could be used or just create a 12v socket if one not available and just watch it with a plug in display. I am a new Maverick owner. About 1K miles no problems yet.

It is a good idea for any Hybrid owner to start / run the vehicle for at least 5 minutes once a week.
Nowhere near enough for a Mav. I drove mine about a half hr/dy about 4 days last wk. It went dead 3 times on me?? Dealer says it’s fine?? If u don’t drive it everyday, there’s 2 problems. Battery they installed in some Mavs are junk. Just 45Ah with mine?? If ur FordPass app is connected to the truck, it is constantly communicating and draining ur battery when the truck is off. Just pull interior fuse 11 to disable all the 24/7 telematics. No negative effects other than u can’t use the app. No big deal-not a necessity.
