Ok you guys asked for it.. I was a calibration lab manager for 10 years and state agencies would send their gear to us for calibration. There are many factors involved that have their contributory errors of measurement, temp, humidity, flow rate, weight, sample container characteristics, barometric pressure and yes even local gravity. Not to mention the prescribed procedures which I really doubt the state auditors won’t shortcut… plus they certify X manufacturers stated tolerance which can swing wildly…

The most consistent method is use the same pump about the same time of day and 1 click shutoff. It doesn’t mean it’s accurate but it will be consistent. Otherwise any simile of accuracy is out the window. There is no basis for uncertainty calculation..

I like the way one reviewer does their milage testing... They fill up at a specific pump at a specific station, drive a 70 mile "loop" (really an "out and back"), then fill up at the same pump at the same gas station. When they fill up, they fill to the first click-off, wait a timed 30-seconds, then fill again to the first click-off.

Since the best-priced gas station near me is very convenient, I'm going to refuel at that one each time, and try to always use the same pump. Should yield consistent results, even if not 100% accurate..

Now if my Maverick would just get here!

I try to fill up at the same pump, I use same Sunoco station@$3.09 RUG. Then drive a 700m drive loop and then refill again. Its not perfect, however try to minimize variables and run a 3000m test.

I think monitoring the MTE number is your best indicator. It's not based on precisely on how much you pumped in, but is based on your rate of consumption.

What I mean is; for the computer, a "full" tank is a fixed value. It does not know if you went above full by topping off or not. It assumes every fill up is the same. We don't know if that value is 12.8 or 13.8 or some other number. But it is always the same. Full = full. Full is 100% reset of the MTE.

UMmmmmm.... I don't think so. I think the tank size is fixed in "firmware" somewhere and is not user defined.

When you refuel and the fuel sender "float" moves from where ever you started to "full" the computer is going to assume you have the same xx.x gallons every time. If you top off, fill the neck, fill the "expansion space" or what have you, it's not going to know that "extra" fuel is in there.

If you top off, you will get more range than indicated. But not more MPG in reality.

People were saying it's impossible (or impractical) to fill up exactly the same way every time. I agree.
I'm just saying if your MTE went up this fill compared to last time, you are doing better because the truck thinks you refilled to the same level, whether you did or not, as long as you hit the
Full tic mark. 😎

So, I am at almost 11,000 miles, and I have recorded ever purchase of gas - including the odo reading, # of gallons and while I was at it, price.
Being a numerologist, and loving the numbers 8, 3 and 5 (part of the Fibonacci sequence and also my birthdate 8-3-55), I let the gas pump click off and then I advance a few more tablespoons of gas until I get an 8, 3 or 5 for the last digit.
That also allows me to see if someone has stolen my credit card # and is using it to buy gas: if I see a gas purchase for $45.00, I'll know someone else used it.
Anyway, I should take a few minutes and add up ALL the gas purchases, and divide that into 11,000. My dashboard shows 42.4 mpg since picking the vehicle up at the dealer. Just eyeballing it, I would expect that actual computed mileage will be close to that....

PS: 55 is ALSO part of the fibonacci sequence.

Has anyone had experience with an OBDII Scan Gauge II or similar device. Scan Gauge although not user friendly does provide tons of engine parameters in real-time including mileage related parameters. I have found it provides good repeatability for monitoring efficiency and driving style for maximizing mpg. If that floats one boat.

I would suggest weighing the vehicle before and after a fill up. This confirms how much fuel is added. Once ready to fill up weigh again. Confirming how much is burned off. Weigh the truck while empty or with the exact set up as before. Also weigh it on the same scale if possible.
Don't forget to adjust for change in barometric pressure! 😇

He is not fibbing about his numbers. My favorite number is 1729 (The first number that can be expressed as the sum of the cubes of two numbers in two different ways = 10 cubed plus 9 cubed AND also as 12 cubed plus 1 cubed)! 🥰

remember when $20 was a fill up. Ugh
I remember when $10 was a fill up. And I'm not that old!

Cheapest gas I ever saw (before I could drive) was 69 cents. Cheapest gas I ever purchased was 79 cents.

My dad "swore" he'd stop driving if gas ever hit $1. (he didn't)

I worked in the trucking industry in as late as year 2000. Diesel was like $1.20 to $1.25 a gallon. We had look up tables of per mile surcharges when and IF diesel got above $1.35. The tables went up to $1.75 and I thought I'd never see the day...

Gas was really stable in the 1990's.
Was $1.14 a gallon in early 2002. Then it started going up like a hockey stick...

I remember buying gas for my new 1964 VW bug for $.18 per gallon. As it only had a 10.6 gallon tank. Fill ups were under $2.00.

I remember 1969 gas was 29 cents a gallon. It cost around $6. to fill my tank, 1967 Ford Gallaxie 500.
