This is the only answer.

Well, it's AN answer, anyway. I'm betting there have been one or two underbody spares that have been maintained clean and rust-free without the use of Fluid Film.

The trick I have used for years is I just clean them off once in awhile and once the rust has started I go to the junkyard and buy a matching rim to the wheels on the ground. Then head over to tire store after I pickup if up a OEM tire pressure sensor. Buy a matching tire to what I have

Assuming you mean just the spare and not the whole truck, that is a sure fire way to need it when you're not at home....thanks to Murphy's law

This is what happened on many of my rides, the spare was a temporary spare 'coz it got chucked as soon as I found a full size rim.

Wondering though about a spare that's been "yard art" in the back forty for donkey's years, it just seems to get used for propping stuff and weighing stuff down..... anywayssss that thing seems practically immortal rust wise, and I think it came off a 90s Ranger, and never looked close to fitting on my 5x114.3 or 5x100 vehicles, I guess I should actually figure out it's bolt pattern.

But it won't have a spot of rust on it.

Though come to think of it, I've had vehicles with 20 year old spare in the up and under, crusty as hell, but they were still solid. In fact it is the retention mechanisms that I have seen come off worst in double decade salty road service. The crank up cables rust through or the brackets fall off.
