Ok guys, I found this thread where member put a golf cart in his bed. I think he let air out of front tires so he could get rear tires onto tailgate. Cart only weighs 700 lbs so maybe load on tailgate is half(?) that!

This page says don't load more than 500lb evenly distributed on wheel wells and tailgate in the middle position. So I'd say don't do more than about 250lbs on tailgate, because it's just the 2 cables holding it up. (it doesn't rest on the bumper)

I've stood on my tailgate, and I'm 340#. I believe the tailgate is rated for 500# by itself.

It's just geometry. It's near impossible to *not* have weight distribution into the bed when the tailgate is in the mid position. Therefore 400 direct on flat tailgate or 500 distributed between angled tailgate and the bed.

Absolutely, the major weight stands on the bed.

Of course, the big 300lb ramp at the dealership rested on the tailgate along, for a moment, with most of the weight of the 480lb bike and the 3 guys pushing it onto the bed. The tailgate passed the test.

The cables are stronger then the thin sheet metal. The weight limits are to keep you from bending the metal gate that is why it specifies evenly distributed. The distribution doesn't change the stress on the cables.

the 500lbs mid position weight is DISTRIBUTED EVENLY on the wheel wells and tailgate (per the owner's manual).

That's what I an concerning, We need climb into/out the bed over the tailgate, sometimes even jump down, I worry about whether the thin cable can support it or not

The cable will hold way more than you think, the tailgate would probably bend/ buckle before the cable would. Look up wire rope strength and look at some of the charts. Stick with the manual!

Yes, though TBH I’m getting old enough to want a step stool of some kind to save my knees getting back down.

Is it safe to stand or put heavy stuff on the tailgate?

There is a 400 lb limit, but someone posted a picture of his golf cart loaded in his maverick. He had to let the air out of his front tires so he could get his carts rear tire center line on the back 2" of his tailgate. If I remember correctly he drove it home about 700 miles. Would have to find thread and verify distance.
