How do you guys like your AWD's? Took delivery of our FWD Eco in December 22 but also have a Hybrid on order. We are moving away from the city so I am thinking seriously about switching that "highly unlikely" hybrid order to an AWD.

When the AWD is not needed does the truck keep it shut down? I am wondering about wearing out the AWD components. I assume a little loss in mileage is to be expected. Let me know guys (and gals)

Mine has been working great. In normal mode it disconnects the rear drive and basically operates in FWD mode under normal conditions. Also, the AWD uses an independent multilink trailing arm rear suspension design which will handle better than the FWD.

LOVE my AWD. Luckly so far, ZERO issues with the entire truck. As I understand the system, its all electronically controlled. When its senses slippage it engages in like nano seconds, otherwise its in FWD. I can't technically explain it all but it works very well that I've experienced. I haven't tried it but believe you can change the drive condition modes that will also change the reactions. Maybe some with better knowledge can give a better explanation. I personally also see it as an additional safety feature. Highly recommended to any that may have a need/desire.

I have only heard of mpg drops in extreme hypermiling situations like when people try to get 35mpg downhill with a tailwind in a 2wd and the awd guys can only get 33.5. Generally only added weight will effect it. the weight difference is similar to having a passenger in the vehicle.

I like mine so far. You can pull up a real-time view of the AWD system to see which drive wheels are engaged. I notice that taking off from a stop under moderate acceleration, the rears are engaged, but once up to cruising speed only the front stay active. I haven't had the chance to drive in inclement weather yet so no idea how that changes things. Pretty neat.

I, originally, ordered and received a 2022 XL Hybrid. I didn't care for the CVT and a test drive of a friend's EB (2WD) convinced me to place an order for a 2023 EB XLT. I decided to go with the AWD to get the 4K Tow package as well as the independent rear suspension.

I sold the XL Hybrid to a forum member.

Switching to the EB AWD was the right decision for me.

And, FWIW, except for the amount of rain we have been receiving, I don't need the AWD in southern California. I do, however, like having the 4K Tow package and don't mind the hit to my MPG.

I put 980 miles on the XL Hybrid in 8 weeks of ownership.
I have put 3100 miles on the XLT EB AWD in the 8 weeks I have owned it so far.

It's worked great for me. No issues, regardless of weather (this is my second winter with the Maverick).

For all my whining about certain parts of the Maverick on this forum, I will say the AWD system is simply sublime. The tires limit its capability if you want to fully max out its limits, but that's to be expected from a vehicle from the factory.

I have to climb and descend a 175' vertical climb (800' horizontal) gravel driveway every day to get to my house construction site in the WNC mountains. It gets torn up by heavy vehicles, and it gets deeply soaked and mushy from soaking rains during freeze-thaw weather. The Maverick AWD handles it all easily.

In another thread, I commented that my Maverick AWD is a tiny bit squirrely on the highway compared to my old RWD Ranger. I don't want to overstate that - it's just that the Ranger would track straight and true forever, and the Maverick doesn't. Somebody else suggested that it was likely the stock tires - they observed the same thing and it went away after they mounted better tires.

Over six months I've averaged 28.4 on 89 Octane gasoline in mixed city and highway driving. I don't have a heavy foot. TBH I don't even notice AWD. The truck just drives like any other CUV or SUV - which makes total sense because the Maverick is an Escape CUV with the hatchback space turned into a bed.

Before I tuned my truck I could consistently get 33 in my awd. I hypermiled on a 5hr highway drive and was able to get 42 for a while. The truck idled for 10 minutes with the air on with my wife and son inside and I averaged overall 37mpg for the whole trip with 2 or 3 other stops. I almost got 600 miles on 1 tank and made it from Houston to Tulsa with enough gs to make the 40 mile round trip to work and home the next day. These trucks are great

I have the '22 Mav XLT 2.0 EB with the 4K tow package, and in the 6 inch snow cover it walks right out of any parking place effortlessly that it's in. The strange part is that I can't get any better than 22 mpg.
And while pulling an open 2 place motorcycle trailer with 2 full size Harleys aboard running through the Smokey Mntns., we averaged 21 mpg. pulling all that extra weight. A real head scratcher.

I have fx4 awd and no tow package ( just hitch ) . mostly fwd except when slippage . computer determine fwd or awd . I am averaging 24 mpg city and 34 highway driving mostly speed limit . have tonneau but mileage about same with or without it seems .

The AWD will function pretty much as FWD when power to the rear wheels is not needed. It also depends in the drive modes too how much power is put where for each wheel. There is no loss in mileage between AWD or FWD on the ecoboosts sans the Tremor packages. There is about a 3k price difference though for AWD on an ecoboost engine. With that said if you do switch your order the bigger consideration here is towing. If need or plan to tow stuff over the 2k limit then AWD is mandatory for the 4k tow package.
