I was loading some 2X4 and 2X6's at Home Depot, while I was strapping them down some guy stopped and said "Next time you should buy a real truck with an 8 foot bed"! A few good comebacks rushed into my head, but I took the high road and ignored him. Not sure why some people cant keep to themselves. What do you think a good comeback would have been?
Tell him next time he should buy a Hybrid Maverick. 40 mpg gives you free lumber.

A funny thing to imagine saying: "8 feet?! Your wife said you're about 7' 10" short!"

The right way to handle it: just the way the OP did.

Not sure what to call it when people enjoy being miserable. Good job not sinking to his level.

I'm talking smack about teslas and prius and the cybercar and other stuff I dislike all the time but I would never say anything to the owners.
Exactly, I might not like the Tesla model y, I find the mustang mach-e to be a much better looking, and more fun all around product. But there's absolutely nothing wrong with someone buying and enjoying their model Y.

I like to say if we all drove the same car, there would be no reason to love cars, there would be no passion surrounding them.

I feel so badly for people whose cars are an extension of themselves.

Screams "I really haven't accomplished much."

Not necessarily true. Alot of folks that have cars that are extensions of themselves are purists, also just plain car lovers and car people. And you can bet your ass with some of the examples of what they drive and or collect and/or take to cars and coffee they have accomplished "Enough"...and sometimes ALOT!! There is NOTHING wrong with someone loving their Porsche 911...or their Mazda Miata. Sometimes...YES...It may scream haven't accomplished much...but not the gang I hang around with.

Comeback.... You should see what I can haul when I drop the bed halfway down. I work a HD and I've seen things from 2x4's sticking out of windows, stacks of lumber on SUV's and once was a BBQ grill in the backseat of a convertible Mustang rental car.

Guys used to say this about my V8, 4wd Dakota with a 6 and a half foot box . I shut one guy up when we raced and I beat him in his full size V8 f150 lol.

My goto response for people asking why I have a small truck: "I'm compensating."

Then I leave. If they get it, it is a great joke. If they don't get it, they weren't worth the braincells to argue with them.

Had a friend who back in the 1992 said he would never buy an extended cab or crew cab. He NEEDED an 8' bed. I asked why and he said "in case I need to haul a sheet of drywall home. We were friends for 25 years until I moved out of state and never once did he buy a sheet of drywall.
My wife's minivan with fold flat rear seats and removable second row seats is probably the most versatile vehicle that we've owned. It can hold 8' boards and full sheets of drywall with no problem. I also put a roof rack on it and used it to haul all of the 16' lumber for the new deck that I built a couple of summer ago (in multiple trips). It handles canoes and kayaks just fine, too. The only thing I wouldn't want to do with it is haul loose dirt or gravel. That's why I got a new Maverick a couple of weeks ago.
