I have been happy with the Pirelli Scorpion AS 3's from Sam's Club after about 500 miles. They do handle better than the OE Conti tires, with a noticeable reduction in road noise as well. They were $640 installed for the 225/65R17 size. I'd say those, the Michelin Defender, or Conti Tour 54 will be the safe choice for a standard all-season tire (not an all-weather like the CrossClimate).
I also don't think the OE Conti tires were that bad, and have said as much on this forum a few times. Unfortunately just last week I had an unavoidable road hazard on a rural B road that would have taken out any tire, and also learned how much the donut sucks, so just decided to get new tires and keep one Conti for a full spare, and sell the other two.
