I rented a Chrysler Pacifica for 2 days and the gear shift knob was placed on the dashboard by the radio.
"So going into the curve, I downshifted into classic rock. Coming out, I shifted back up to classical, and then when it straightened out flat and steady, I pushed it up into country and western. (I suppose that that dork that was all over the road and crashed somehow shifted to disco!)"

I have a sixth sense of what gear I'm using.
I was taught to shift by the engine, not the speedometer.

More than once, I tried to shift my super beetle into 5th!

Guess I am "Old Fashioned".
I have always "looked" at the shifter, when I use it...

With my manuals I never have to look at them. Probably wouldn't help anyway. In the bike it's a foot shifter.

This is my biggest gripe. Sometimes when I backup, I accidentally spin the dial clockwise, which goes forward. Not good. It would be nice if it had a stop at both ends.
Anymore, if i can't change it i just give in and adapt. Let the little stuff go and work on the big stuff.

It's a little different for the hybrid as there is no sound difference as one would hear with a regular transmissioned ICE.

I've done the same. This was one of the first criticisms of the dial shifter. Was hoping Ford would take heed and fix that by the time 2025 rolled around.

I have only had issues a few times in my first year when I was doing a 3 point turn because of the horrible turning radius the mavericks have. I do miss the turning radius in my grand cherokee laredo
If robots are to be believed, the difference between the Maverick's turning radius and the JGC is a couple of feet, or 2 foots.....
Compared to my Chevy long bed, there is a corn sider able difference...

It's actually a lot different.
Since there are no gears, and except for going into crawl speed low, there is nothing to shift to once you are moving forward.

My DD is a 2023 BS BL where the start button is in the top of the dash
I get confused every time I got into my 2024 Maverick Lariat Tremor where the start button is in the lower area of the dash

I rented a Chrysler Pacifica for 2 days and the gear shift knob was placed on the dashboard by the radio. It was easily seen without looking down. I found this set up was much easier to use than the Fords gear shift knob position. In 2 days of driving I had zero issues with it, unlike the Ford shifter where I sometimes accidentally shift into reverse.

The shifter dial in the pic is way too close to the volume knob and that defrost mode dial...someone will complain that they turn the gear shift when they intend to turn the volume.

i like the non-stop spin on the Ford shifter.

Ford could have done a better job with the Maverick's rotary shifter. As mentioned above the notches are barely noticeable and in addition to that it spins continuously.

My wife previously had a 2022 Edge and that rotary shifter had much much more noticeable detents and it had hard stops at Park & Drive, so you can't keep rotating right past Drive or left past Park. It's more convenient because if you want to go to Park or Drive you just rotate it quickly until it stops. When I first got my Maverick I thought there was something wrong with the rotary shift dial because it didn't have hard stops like the Edge. Not sure why Ford doesn't use the same set up on the Maverick.
Ford is saving money. That Edge shifter knob is $ .014 cheaper! I heard next year the Mavericks will ship out without the tire air valve caps. Will save $.05 per tire!

We do enjoy the "shift" noise in Sport mode. A bit cheezy, but ok. I have been thinking about trying to come up with a small glue on button (or something similar) for the round knob and two second "buttons" on each end of the panel the shift knob sits on, one near park, other near drive. Would have to be glued on just right to ensure you were in the appropriate gear. Better be good glue also. Anyone else got a fix it idea?

Yeah, I love the virtual engine/transmission shifting sounds generated in Sport mode. Hats off to the engineer who planted a bit of fun in Sport.
I don't know about rigging up a stopper. Seems more trouble and/or risk of screwing something up. But, knowing the Maverick Maniacs here, someone is bound to come up with something. Just use caution.

Once I got used to the shifter, it isn't difficult to use.
The problem noted, with unintended shift dial movement, is one I think Ford could address.

I would think that an easy fix would be to put a "safety" on the shift knob, so it would require a button press/hold to release the lock before the shift dial could be turned...

Ahh....No, hell no.
I would rather have the dial or push buttons on the dash. At least I can manage the current setup with gloves on.
