Oh so the crossover is optional? Might be even better. I was on the fence about the Kicker Key, but I think you convinced me.
Yes the kicker key 200.4 has an integrated DSP that works very well, it's very surprising in this price range.

It sets the gain, speaker size, crossover and time alignment automatically by just playing several test tone files. You don't have as much customization as more costly devices but it also doesn't take a trained tech to install and configure.

I am very happy with the kicker key. The sound is quite impressive.

I'm considering the same. Did you find the RSE-165 tweeters fit into the OEM location or under the grill or did you have to mount them on top? I am considering the Focal IS Ford 165s for the front since they are plug and play but they are considerably more expensive ($380/pr on Crutchfield).

Tweeters are in stock location , under the grill. I wrapped electrical tape about 6 times around each tweeter. Fit perfectly. Not sure what you mean by plug in play. The door speakers were an exact fit and crutchfield included the correct speaker harness for them.

The IS Ford 6.5 speakers are exact replacements with direct connection using the Maverick speaker harness and have the same mounting bracket. The tweeters also match the existing ones so they can drop into the existing slots. It appears they have a higher end tweeter according to Focal but not likely worth the cost difference.

Did you reuse the existing mounting bracket in the door? Thank you again for the details on your install.

For the door speakers, crutchfield includes the plastic bracket to mount the speakers.

A local shop has 4 different sets of focal 6.5 components on their demo wall and I listened to them.

The kx2 is really awesome. For 1300 it ought to be. I would use a high powered amp for them, and I can't justify that amp or the speakers but I loved what I heard.

I didn't like the metal tweeter in the Ford IS165. It was really bright to me.

I preferred the auditor rse165 and they're less than half the cost so that helps.

Edit: might as well mention the 4th set I listened to, which were the flax evo ps165. They were pretty smooth. If I'd never heard the kx2 I wouldn't have guessed there was something even better.

Thanks for sharing the info on your build. Some of us who are waiting are wondering just how bad the factory system is and what works to upgrade it. You just made it a little easier for many of us in the situation.

This is excellent information. I haven't located the Focals locally so wasn't sure. I am so glad I learn from others - saves me $$$. I will add the rse165s as the set I will go with.

I listened to many. I like clear, concise music. Not muddy bass. I found the focals sounded best for $150. Obviously everyone has their own tastes.

Does the kicker key need a power line ran to it, or is that taken care of with the Hoel harness?

Needs power and ground. I think the amp can use as small as 12ga.. but if I'm pulling a power wire I'm at least bringing in 8 gauge to future proof it a bit.

That was an option on Hoel. I decided to not buy the extra wiring kit. I ran a wire from battery to the hoel harness. He included a power and ground pig tail to make wiring the power and ground much easier. Message Hoel, he is very good at responding. I am just cheap and decided to run my own power and ground

I did not use the crossovers. After lots of research I decided not to use them . Apparently the kicker key does a good job of balancing the sound.
To clarify, you did not use the 12 db high-pass passive crossovers that came with the Focal set but used the Kicker Key in bi-amp mode so that it used the 24db at 3500 Hz active crossovers, correct?

But in bi-amp mode, you only powered the front door speakers and tweeters with the Kicker Key amp, also correct?
