it’s not partially true it is completely true. What you’re saying is logical - the heavier the load (full throttle input) the greater the gains you’ll see using 93 but to say there is no benefit at less than 50% throttle is entirely incorrect.
so, at idle? 😉

I really meant a benefit you can perceive or otherwise realize. not just a theoretical advantage.

It’s not theoretical these are realized, true improvements.

Just because your butt dyno can’t detect it doesn’t mean it’s theoretical and not real.

So I ran 87 for the first 30k miles of ownership and have recently switched to running 93 in it and have noticed a drastic difference in performance and fuel economy. Turbocharged engines run better with higher octane, whereas engines like hybrid could run on 87 just fine. It all boils down to personal preference and these modern cars are able to run and adjust to any fuel they have in them, so your results may vary!

An interesting topic…🥴

To answer the OP’s question, I do LOTS of highway driving and usually use 87 unless I’m towing or working it hard somehow. I tried the higher octane on a couple of trips and gas mileage didn’t change and my buttometer didn’t register a change… I do try to stay away from budget brands as they rarely have the better additives. Hoping to make the 150k+ club in a few years!

There have been so many threads about this over the past 3 years it is hilarious, but I get it . New folks come and go. I can only relate to my experience and have no desire to force feed the benefits on higher octane gas on anyone.

It is actually quite remarkable to get a "cheapish" old dog like myself to spend more $$$$ on gas. :ROFLMAO:

I read over the manual and it said it's built to run on 87 but performs best on 91 or higher. Since I only had my Maverick for a week before I had the deer accident, I only put fuel in it twice, and I used 93 fuel. I was just curious what other Mav owners were putting in their trucks because filling up with 93 can get real expensive real quick, despite the great fuel economy of the truck. I also may sound dumb for this, but is it bad to switch up the fuel you are using for different situations. For example, my family is going on a ski trip in December and I am hoping I'll have the truck back by then. Is it okay to use 87 until the trip and 93 while on the trip? These are probably things I should know, but I've never purchased a new vehicle before this, and now I am trying to be much more thorough.
Been using 87 octane for the two years we have owned our maverick. We tow quite often, 3100 lb boat. 2500 lb sxs including trailer. Don't see a need for higher octane. Also get 34mpg hwy on 87.

I use 91 or 93 when that's not available.

I tried 91 octane once and only got 45.7 MPG. Using 87 I get 44 MPG.
So.. the extra mile and a half not worth the extra cost.

I run 91 or 93, depends on what the station has. When prices spike I've put 89 in a couple times. I aldo only use top tier fuels (because of DI). I run ethanol free in my other cars (more expensive than 93) and came from a truck that got 12mpg. so I'm still running cheaper than I've become used to.

I've used E-15 88 octane for the most part. I tow a lot and have mostly highway miles. Averaging about 38 mpg overall with no issues.

87 is all I have run. Around town get about 24, on road trips get around 32. No complaints, why spend more for higher octane!

I appreciate everybody's responses. I saw multiple people talk about their experiences with the hybrid and ecoboost engine. I guess I didn't specify that I have the ecoboost with AWD. In the current season the wife and I are in, we probably won't be towing much. Would love to have a camper in the future. We wanted a truck that could do the things we needed like picking up things from Lowe's, Home Depot, etc. for home projects, but wasn't a big gas guzzler because I still need to drive about 60 mi each day for work. We chose the AWD because we've had a couple snow storms the past couple years here in Texas and didn't have a vehicle that could get us places. We also like to take some ski trips if we can manage it in a given year. It is about 60-62 cents more per gallon for 93 where I live, and I haven't even seen 91 as an option at any stations here. As long as it's not detrimental to the engine, I am okay with sacrificing a little performance to save the money. But I have learned to use top tier only!
