Ford strikes a deal to help end its chip shortage

9:07 AM EST November 18, 2021

Ford and chip manufacturer GlobalFoundries on Thursday said they plan to work together to boost supplies for the automaker's vehicles and the broader US auto industry but gave few details about what the deal entails.

The two companies announced a non-binding agreement that could involve increasing production capacity for Ford's current lineup and performing joint research and development on several categories of chips that are likely to be key to future cars, such as battery-management systems and self-driving systems.

Over the past year, a global chip shortage has caused Ford and other automakers to curtail vehicle production. Most companies have directed the chips they receive to their most profitable vehicles. That has led automakers to explore ways to boost access to chips.

Majority owned by Abu Dhabi's sovereign wealth fund, GlobalFoundries became publicly traded this year when it sold a stake in its business in a $26 billion initial public offering. The company has said that some of the $2.6 billion raised in the deal will go toward building a second chip factory at a site in Malta, New York.

Ford and GlobalFoundries did not disclose any terms of the deal or say whether Ford was providing funding or other commitments to reserve capacity at any of GlobalFoundries' current or future factories. The two said only that the "strategic collaboration" does not involve any cross-ownership between the companies.

"We hope Ford and GlobalFoundries will team up to grow the supply in a more formal way to support our current vehicle lineup and our future needs," Ford Vice President Chuck Gray said in an interview.

Unfortunately it will take probably at least a year and more likely several before they start making chips. I wonder what the lead time is on chip fab equipment? Long term this is a great idea, though.

I hang out on Anandtech. It's a forum a lot like this one but focused on computers. Intel and TSMC two of the worlds largest chip manufacturers just announced they were investing billions in building new manufacturing facilities.

The lead time on the new facilities is 3-5 years from breaking ground to completion.

Is Anand even still involved day to day? I used to go there back when he was first starting out. I think he was still in high school, like 15-20 years ago. Good source of information on new CPUs and GPUs and stuff. Tom's hardware was good too, dunno if he is still around either.

No he sold the site several years ago and moved on. The site has gone through several owners since then. Tom's and Anandtech are owned by the same company now.

Last I heard Anand landed a job with Apple but even that was several years ago so not sure if he is still there or not.

IIRC Tom is a physician in Germany with that career outside of his hardware site so it's no surprise he sold. Figures Anand would cash in, too. That dude had potential and running a hardware nerd site wouldn't be much of a professional challenge for him. More power to them both.

Made in USA.

Great example for others in the automotive industry.

While some of the chips manufactured by Global Foundries are produced in the United States they also have manufacturing facilities in Singapore and Europe.

Also FWIW while they maybe headquartered in the United States. Until they went public with an IPO in October of 2021, the United Arab Emirates had a complete controlling interest in the company.
