My two cents on Ford ESP plans: If you buy a plan for $1000 in 2023, and only ever need an $800 repair a few years down the road, you likely still made out better when considering 2023 dollars vs 2029 (or whenever) dollars. And an $800 dollar repair is like 3 hours of shop time.

Anyways, if you are comparing plans, here they are in spreadsheet form, which is a little easier to see what each plan adds. The file has two sheets, each with a different layout.

Of course they had to put that stupid EGR valve in the highest one.

I think the Base plan would cover most everything I've ever had go wrong on a vehicle, and I drive one that's 17 years old.

Thanks for this. I purchased both premium 5 year service and 5 year maintenance ESP plans and financed them with my Maverick. I felt like the plans are worth the money for the first model year of a cheap vehicle and with build quality still a huge question mark that I plan on keeping for as long as possible.

It would be interesting to see what you actually paid for the plan at time of purchase vs buying same plan after.

What is the significance of the yellow, purple, and blue highlighted items?

Agree. When my 2023 comes in, I plan to wait for the FordPass Points to hit my account and then I will buy one "after the time of purchase", partially with those points. From what I understand, the price of the Ford ESP does not go up until 12 months after purchase date? So anytime in that first 12 months should not impact the price. You would lose the ability to finance it, but that is no big deal.

100% what I understood as well.
A few truths - 1) Finance managers can mark up the price of an ESP package price from what you could purchase from Ford later. 2) You can put that on your total financing however you are then paying interest on your protection package as well. 3) Your friendly business manager will tell you "for only pennies a day you can protect your purchase" as they go thru your wallet - hahaha - 4) You can easily get no interest financing on an ESP plan ( due to the fact your truck is covered for the first 36 months anyway ) after you get your truck.

Here is just one ad from a Ford group -

Save $$ on Genuine Ford Protect and Lincoln Protect Extended Service Plans
Why pay full retail prices for true factory-backed Ford Protect Extended Service Plans (ESP) when you can get Ford PremiumCare coverage at reduced pricing from Zeigler Auto Group? The same is true for Lincoln Protect Plans! Interest-free financing options are also available for each Ford|Lincoln ESP Plans. Not only do we offer the lowest prices, but we will match prices for identical globally-branded Ford|Lincoln Protect ESPs with the same mileage, time, key, lighting, or rental options.

When they say - why pay FULL RETAIL - what they really are saying is the markup from the dealership ( business manager ) at truck purchase.

paneubert - using your points is a great idea I never even though of :)

I have bought ESP plans for three vehicles (including one for my current Maverick) - all of which were first year vehicles. The first two (Pontiac Bonneville SSEi and a Crown Vic LX Sport) had way more dollars in repairs than warranty cost plus it provided a rental car.

With my Maverick, I went with the Premium Care and included an upgrade in rental coverage (including first day rental), replacement interior and exterior lights and key coverage (replacement keys and fobs) - All with a zero dollar deductible. Less than 2K for 10 years/75,000 miles.

I anticipate this will be money well spent based on the issues already being reported here.

That's awesome yours has lasted so long but nowadays they pack so much electronics and microchips I'd get as much as you could afford.

ESP plans are much like gambling in Vegas - The house always wins hahahahaha On some vehicles you certainly can come out ahead - I bought a extended warranty from Chrysler for my Dodge Ram Promaster because it is such a total POS - just a drivetrain warranty because most everything else is not that expensive or I can fix it myself or I got a bunch of duct tape for the delicate stuff ...... .

Should be items that are not included on lower tier plans. But I was distracted while making that sheet so sorry if there are errors.

Some truth to that, but I think a better analogy would be health/auto/home insurance. Yeah, across the board the carrier takes in more money than they pay out, but many purchasers come out ahead. More winners than in casinos, many more.

I am normally strongly against these things, but the price on a 10 year/100k mile plan, especially if you have an XL that doesn't even have most of the items in the top tier plans, and the ability to pay with Ford points makes it a purchase worth considering.

  • I paid $1570 for the 5 yr/60k miles 7,500 mile intervals Premium maintenance plan
  • I paid $2355 for the 5yr/60k miles PremiumCARE service plan
  • TOTAL for both = $3925
100% what I understood as well.

To item # 2, I financed at 1.9%, so the interest on $3925 is very small. I didn't want to pay for the warranties separately, or out of pocket, so that's why I chose to finance them along with the truck.

YMMV, but there's a saying about insurance, "it's expensive when you don't need it, and cheap when you do."

I bought the ESPs to give me peace of mind.
