Also, I am considering the Black Rhino Arches wheel but it only comes in a 17x8. I want to put 245/65/R17 Falcon Wildpeaks on it. Is 8 inches too wide for that size tire? I was looking a chart that suggested 245's needed to be married to a 7" wide wheel. Any thoughts?

No issues when Discount Tire put 245/65s on my 17x8 Reikas

So I am in the process of researching new Wheels and Tires. The stock setup on the my 2023 XL Hybrid (yet to be built) is steel wheels (27.2 lbs) from 225/65/R17 with Continental ProContact (24 lbs). Total weight comes to 51.2 lbs each. I'm liking the Black Rhino Arches 17x8 (25 lbs) married to a Falken Wildpeak Trail (37.9 lbs) for a total weight of 62.9 lbs. That's a net increase of 11.7 lbs per corner in the new setup. My question is, how much will that much added weight affect MPG? I was guessing around 2-3 MPG. Any ideas?

By the way, I could switch to the Maxis Razor AT which comes in at only 34 lbs there by reducing the net increase to only 7.8 lbs per corner. Do you think the weight savings with the Maxxis tires would be a noticeable benefit? Would love your thoughts.

I went with the Nitto Nomad Grappler in part bc they were one of the lightest 245/65s. They are also still 3PMS rated with a good mileage warranty and strong reviews. They should perform competitively with the Wildpeak Trail or BFG Trail Terrains while being a fair amount lighter. Stepping into a full AT like the Toyo or true Wildpeak will only further increase the weight.

May depend on where you are buying from. I went through Discount Tire and they could not get the Maxxis AT or the Vredestein Pinza AT which were the others I looked at bc they were also lighter weight in 245/65.

I dropped about 1.5MPG originally when I had swapped the stock 225s on my FX4 wheel for 235 Toyo OC III. So far, the combo of Reika wheel and 245/65 Nittos has kept the same MPG, probably bc the tire weight increase was minimal and the Reikas weigh the same or even a bit less than the FX4 wheel.

IMO I'd save any weight I could. You're likely to still get plenty of performance and capability from something like the Maxxis, Nitto or Vredestein.

1 lb of unsprung weight = 20lbs of sprung weight. It'll will be equivalent to carrying ~900lbs around at all times.

Holy shit. That is a lot. Well I decided to go with Nitto Nomad Grappler's (34 lbs each) instead so that would put my extra "sprung" weight equivalent at ~600 lbs. The only way to reduce that further would be to get fully forged lightweight wheels and that would cost too much.

This is incorrect, if you're talking about suspension performance the ratio is much much lower, if you're talking about rotational mass to static weight there are other factors that come into play but it's generally about 7-10 pounds of static weight for each pound of rotational weight that's added. Still a significant amount.

Rotational mass. I'm not going to argue with you as you probably know more than me, but even at 10lbs, yeah it's pretty significant. Lightweight wheel companies often tout the 1lb=20lb rule so that's where I got it from. It gets even more tricky when you figure that added tire weight is even further from the power center than the wheel and affects it even more. Then you got rolling resistance. Point is, tread carefully when veering from factory combos if parasitic loss is of concern.

I'd love to know what you're going with. I have an XLT Hybird about to be delivered and I'm looking for something very similar! I don't mind losing SOME mpg....but I don't want to defeat the purpose of the Hybrid engine. Let me know what you conclude!

I ordered the Nitto Nomad Grappler since they were 34 lbs each. Gonna pair them up with Black Rhino Arches Wheels in 17x8 which is a 25 lb wheel. (Part # 1780ACH305108B76)

My lariat has the standard black and chrome 18s with the Michelins. Dealer where I bought it had a used XLT with black 17 wheels, wish I’d had the forethought to get them to swap the wheels as I hate the look of the 18s of my Maverick.

I have hybrid first edition 225/60/r18 Michelin primacy 100H 28.5" 8/32" Tread
When they are gone I am considering General Altimax RT45 235/60/R18 29.1" 107H 11/32" Tread and weigh only 27.105lbs. currently $196.00 plus mounting and certificates at discount. (Less trade-in for Michelin primacy at your local discount tire if manager will do it, best if done at time of purchase). OR your dealer can do it if you want to add it onto your purchase loan. There is an Altimax RT45 225/60/R18 but if I remember right it is 100H 24.22lbs 28.5" at about $176.00 real close size and weight to Michelin primacy OEM.
For snow country Altimax has 365AW (All Weather) with 3peak rating around 27-28 lbs.

Does anyone know the weight of the FX4 wheel with no tire mounted?
Wondering this as well. Guess I'll have to break out the scale.

To be clear, this is the gloss black one here:

Ford Maverick Factory Tires Sizes & Wheels Specs For 2022 Maverick: Width, Offset, Bolt Pattern, Center Bore, Thread Size, Weight 2022 Maverick XLT FX4 Black Wheels

I'll grab a wheel from storage tomorrow and check.
