This is starting to get too complicated. So a store that cuts keys can make me a few extras of these?
IMG_0377.jpeg
They can cut as many as you like.
If indeed with a transponder to do more than just physically open door - truck can only support 4 such keys.
Need 2 at Admin level to allow truck to record the 3 or 4th key info to become another Admin key.
Original not required to create extra Admin key.
That's why having that spare at least 3rd Admin key is smart, if you lose original. (my 3rd is non-fob type)

Now, what I just realized - not sure if say I have 3 extra cut, and program for 2 extra Admin. There's 4.
Then you lose an original key fob, so want to Admin that extra key you had.
Not seen process to tell truck how to drop a key code.
If you program a 5th key to be Admin - does it drop the 1st or 4th in it's list?
Or probably now need to run thru the process with everything, like programming 3rd & 4th key as if new, and lost key is dropped.

I believe if you top out at 4, you have to manually remove at least one before programming of another will be successful. I haven't heard/seen the process to do that, so unless it is in ForScan, then you might be up against a wall and need to go to the dealership to have them remove one or more from the set of 4.

Edit to add: People online claim ForScan can remove keys.

In my 2022 manual Mykey paragraphs are
located immediately after Keys and Remote Controls. You might look in your manual's index for MyKey there are six or seven entries in index for different paragraphs. Maybe Ford eliminated the option in subsequent years. Basically you create an additional Admin Key then you start truck with any of the Admin Keys EXCEPT ONE WHICH IS NEEDED TO RESET/CHANGE ANY MY KEYS. You go into menu, settings,... to create a MyKey. Manual has step by step.
I didn't find it; even did a CRTL-F search for MyKey. All I can find is this (p. 67):

PROGRAMMING THE REMOTE
CONTROL
Contact an authorized dealer to program
remote controls for your vehicle.
The next page starts the Doors and Locks section.

Thanks Hey, I have the original 2 but like a lot here, would just like to have one to hide somewhere just for unlocking and starting just in case.

See:
Well now that would stink - create extra keys just to be sure, and still need to pay someone to remove entries to use one of your extras.
I'm going to go thru the Forscan Lite menus a tad better to see if something there about a reset process. Can reset all these modules, be stupid not to include this type of reset.
Hmmm, just realized I better read carefully in case it says wipe out the table completely.
That would suck. (ok mental reminder, don't do Fri night late in work parking lot)

That video I linked walks you thru the process. It is possible. A bit scary though since it removes ALL the keys and then asks you to immediately program in 2. Should not be a problem.....but freaks me out a bit since if you screw it up, I assume you can't start the truck at all and need to have it towed (or have mobile service come reprogram your truck for you).

If you loose one of 2 admin keys you can use the survivor admin key to revert all (cannot pick just one) my keys back to admin keys and then create another admin key. The dealer can create a duplicate admin key using the key code that came with the truck. Not sure of procedure.

Same boat though - max 4 keys, doesn't matter Admin or MyKey limited.
Lose a key - recover a MyKey, or you have an extra Admin ready to go.
Sounds like no auto-replace ability to replace a lost key with a 5th key non-setup but ready to go with enough Admin keys.
Dealer option is probably decent money. My Dealer gave special 1 yr warranty on several things - 2 sets of lost keys replaced was in the deal.

Also to my prior post checking Forscan Lite for Test/Setup procedures - nothing in there for dealing with keys. Gotta go full Forscan process.

Seem like some have posted from dealer programing free on purchased replacement with others claiming just over $200 maybe including key? I keep putting off getting second backup pair for storage in safe (living dangerously).

They are supposed to.

So with 2 - you can take a cut key with transponder and program truck to accept it for free.

With only 1 you cannot.

Sometimes nice to have 3.

One key I got isn't available now. But it's my 3rd.
Strattec Transponder Ignition Key 128-Bit Chip 5923293 for Ford 164-R8128

But the other is. Need some pliers to turn it without a fob, but as hidden backup works fine. No programming on this required obviously.

So, with that key shaft cut to match your fob&key, you can open and start your truck? I have only one key but was quoted $550 to make another by a ford dealer. Personally, I dislike carrying that fistful of electronics and key. I've made it through my first 56 years of driving without all that junk, but abackup key is kind of a
"must have".

I think you can open the door and turn accessory on but the truck will not start unless the chip inside the fob is within inches of dash. If you leave a key inside truck and lock using the keypad the fob will not start truck until code is entered on keypad to turn the fob back on. Part of anti theft alarm.

For us (XL & XLT at least) - open door only with key shaft.

And your normal key better be inside to grab fast.

Because as soon as you unlock the door, the alarm is going to give 10 seconds for a key with transponder to turn ignition to On position. Or the alarm will go off. Don't discover this late in evening at home...

Actually, it does that to me anyway using the key fob manually. But at least then it's in my grubby hand ready to go.

Read this thread to avoid that dealer charge, unless you have no keycode info given to you with truck. I'm assuming used? Or you should have gotten 2 keys.

Not really sure what happened to the several Amazon dealers with this when I got it - but this key is available on wide range of models & years, with transponder to open and start truck.
This gives list in case goof-ball locksmith says no after just hearing what vehicle.

But as you read thread you may discover a problem getting it cut locally. Perhaps they have a flat cut key without fob too.

For those looking to have a extra key and fob as a backup. I purchased 2 keys with just a picture I sent them. I program Both keys and they work just as good as the ford oem. So 2 backup keys for $70.

Good information. What is the procedure for programming the new key after getting it cut?
