New member here in So Cal. Two questions please.... I just bought a used, 17k XL AWD but it only had 1 key. Other than the dealer I read that locksmiths may be able to program a replacement key fob but can they also cut the key for the ignition and program it as well, if needed?

I am buying a set of 19x7.5 Lariat wheels and the OEM tire size is 225/55-19. Anyone go with a slightly wider tire on the same wheel. I dont want taller as I dont want to mess with the spedo and gearing. Just wondering what others may have accomplished?

Thank you

Actually, they program the truck to recognize the transponder in the key as valid.

So confirm the locksmith does have the software to do so for make & model, and if they provide fob that can be done prior to cutting it - just to confirm they got the right frequency fob.
From posts (like in the 5 similar threads below), this is different than prior years.
You still needed 2 admin keys - but an in truck process would allow truck to see those 2, and allow a 3rd and 4th to be added by you manually for free.

Sounds like that has been done away with for 25/26. But you couldn't have used it anyway.
So think about if you want a flat non-fob key also cut to be used. Should be cheaper as a batch.
If you don't have door keypad - sometimes it's nice to have a non-fob key to get in and drive.

That way locksmith should remove the lost fob so it's not wasting space, and get your 1 or 2 new keys added.

ETA: corrected based on below post.

For what it's worth I was able to add a third key (using my two factory keys) in the car using the programming process in my 2025 Lobo. I'm not saying you're right or wrong, I honestly don't know if Ford changed it, but based on my experience with my '25 I think at least some 2025s can.

As you correctly pointed out, though, it wouldn't help OP as you need two (already programmed) keys to add another using the in-car process. I second confirming with a locksmith that they have the appropriate software. I was told (but don't know for sure) that only Ford dealers had the required software to add a key when you only have 1 to start with.

OP I'd go with HeyBales' advice and chat up some locksmiths to see if they have the right software. If not, you probably have to go the dealer route. If it were me I'd get a second key from the dealer and then use the in-car method to add a 3rd (or more) spares to save paying the dealer for all of them.

Thank you both very much, extremely helpful.

Trashwings, so if I have to go the dealer route, I can potentially take the key, fob and cut key and program from within the truck, even though I only have 1 now?

Pretty cool to hear the truck has a brain and whoever has the right software can plug in and see how many coded keys exist.

HeyBales, good to see someone from KC. I was born and raised in KCK then moved out to OP, was there for 39 years till moved to Atlanta and then to So Cal in 99. All 3 of our cars, have the KC Chiefs on the back window.

Thank you both again

25MY manual doesn't have a section on MyKey.

On pre-25MY that section of info in the dashboard menu would show how many keys are in the list.

Maybe it's still there, or only on XL as the expected fleet trim truck.

Admittedly I'm not positive on the Maverick, I haven't personally had to do it, but on previous cars I've owned the dealer has software that connects to your car's ECU and can reprogram the keys even if you don't have one. Typically they can even cut keys based on your VIN number, ie if you lost all your keys somehow. Again, I don't know about Mavericks in particular for this, definitely worth calling your Ford dealer and at least asking. It should be a flat rate.

Once you have a second key programmed to the car you can add additional keys from within the car/without the dealer. I forget the exact process but there's a little keyfob shaped indentation in the center console cubby underneath the little felt liner. You place one key in there, press the start button (don't start the truck just turn on accessory power), let it sit for like 10 seconds or something, turn car off, swap for the second key, turn car on, 10 seconds, back off, put on the new (unprogrammed) key into the slot, car on/10 seconds and it should lock/unlock the doors to confirm the programming took place. That's all I had to do on mine, but as stated, requires two keys to already be programmed.

HeyBales, interesting, I don't recall seeing that info in my dash when poking around. Perhaps the ability to program new keys is still present, but the info in the dash was removed?

That option was only for the MyKey function - turned an existing admin key into a non-admin limited key with all the fun and features for a driver on restrictions.

It just happened to mention how many slots used of the 4 available.
Indeed the programming aspect didn't use it - same process you mentioned.

Yes dealers can do key cut lookup for VIN, if you don't have key tag that gave a number.
Likely will charge for that. Maybe more.
Getting into the stored info to delete the missing fob transponder, and add another - of course a charge.
Frankly, if you bring 2 new fobs to be cut and added - they should give a deal.
I'm sure their price for new fob isn't competitive though - but could be.

Can you tell us where you purchased your 3rd key?
Thanks,

On the tires comparison:
1778209428275-d3.webp

The Lariat tire will be a tiny bit bigger than the XL tire in diameter, 0.7%.
Thank you, this helps as I am trying to determine what wider tire i can put on the 19s and stay in the diameter range. Like a 235 or 245/50 19, so will look up in that chart and then check to see if those sizes will still fit a 19x7.5 wheel.
