Eco mode question.

What exactly is happening to the truck when I turn on eco mode? From what I've noticed it does significantly affect gas mileage. Does anyone know what is happening to accomplish this? Is it simply a different tuning or is it shutting off cylinders?
I've heard it is not good for the engine to disable cylinders which seems to be a new trend for fuel economy savings in new cars. I will avoid using it if that's the case

I believe it reprograms the throttle, so it delivers a little less gas at any given position sort of like between rain and regular drive mode I think is how it feels AND when you let off the gas, regen braking is noticeably slightly more.

Not shutting off cylinders ever.

I think of the driving modes as paddle shifters but instead of higher or lower gears, for type of drive. For me, I use eco mode mostly and tow when in heavy traffic or city hills cause I would rather have the revs instead of lugging the engine (driving preference). Once I over 1k miles, sport is going to get exercised!

As far as I know, no one has really looked into exactly what happens when you change drive modes. On the eb, with the wastegate being computer controlled, I’d bet it’s open more to limit boost (and added fuel) in addition to modifying the throttle response and trans tuning.

Acceleration in Eco mode won’t be as sharp as in normal driving, which can occasionally be frustrating, but can also save fuel. Some economy settings can be so aggressive that they will actually push the pedal back against your foot if they detect you getting a little too enthusiastic.

In other words, it makes you drive like a granny! (Which isn't always bad...)

I agree but it works great, my average miles per gallon have gone up 4mpg to 28 in mixed driving and 470 miles/tank.
Just have to remember to turn it on! You don’t have to change your driving speed either.
To feel the difference, switch to sport mode RPM.

I have noticed that in eco mode it will not downshift as much going up hills as it does in normal, keeping rpms down.

Did Ford do away with the ECO drive mode on the 2023 Maverick Ecoboost ? I have Normal, Tow Haul, Slippery, Mud Ruts and Sand but no ECO mode. I called the local Ford service dept and the guy said he honestly didn't know. Geez.

You have an FX4. The FX4 came with mud/ruts and sand modes instead of eco and sport.

Well, you're not missing anything. You can do the same thing eco mode does by just not pushing the throttle so hard. I added eco and sport modes to my FX4 with FORScan to try them out, but ended up removing eco because it's worthless to me. It was just another mode to click through to get to the ones I use. Sport is fun but I rarely use it.

Don’t have it on my ‘24 EcoBoost FX4 either, BlueOval, I have exactly the same as you! Dealer told me they can’t add Eco or Sport! I cry B.S, they just don’t know
