Yes it was, and it was pretty fast for a six cylinder in the 1960s and 70s.
It was ok for its day. Most pull em out and drop em off at the scrap yard. I made a fixture that I use to convert slant sux engine K frames to accept small block V8 motor mounts. That wasnt a typo it's a slant sux. Because they suck. It's a great taxicab engine, or for an irrigation pump, but nothing more.

BTW the H code 383 Commando V8 for plymouth, and 383 magnum for dodge was available in darts and barracudas starting in 1967. The M code 440 super commando for plymouth, and 440 magnum for dodge was available in darts and barracudas in 1969. The first 'Cuda edition barracuda was the 1969 440 M code car. The 1969 Dodge Dart GTS was available as a 340, 383, or 440 magnum equipped factory hot rod.

Also the 426 Hemi was equipped in 50 specially modified 1968 dodge darts and 50 specially modified 1968 barracuda fast backs. 25 darts with automatic, 25 darts with standard transmission. Ditto for the barracuda. LO23 was the start of super stock dart dodge vin BO29 for the 68 hemi barracuda.

Hurst performance on 9 mile road in detroit Michigan converted them. They came with light weight Owen's Corning window glass. No window regulators, no heaters, no sound deadener, no side view mirror, no windshield wipers, no radio. no back seat, a pair of dodge A100 van bucket seats, on aluminum seat tracks, and fiberglass fenders and fiberglass hoods. Installed in the rear was a Dana 60 truck axle, and in the front was the 426 hemi super stock V8. It fits once you took a sledge hammer to the RH inner fenderwell. That's how Hurst made them fit. Cars were to be picked up by customer and came in primer grey only. These vehicles were not to be used on the street, and did not come with a warranty. These were factory super stock drag race cars.

They worked so well, that the NHRA created a class just for them. Out of the 100 built about 25-30 of them are still duking it out in this class over 50 years later.

Hope yall enjoyed the history lesson.

There are two cars I owned that I wish I still had, my 1967 Firebird Convertible and my 1977 Firebird Trans Am. Both would be worth $$$ today.
Sold my 2 year old 1970 Olds 442 W30 convertible with 4 speed and 3:91 W27 alum rear for $1600. This is the exact combination you see topping $300k on Barret-Jackson.

Thank you for the details. I raced a 65 Dart 273 and a 65 Valiant Slant Six with a partial dealership sponsor in NW Arkansas. Both did well in NHRA stock classes. The dealership also raced a '57 Plymouth station wagon called WillieGoNoMo which was a fun car to play with at the drag strip. I do, however, disagree that the Slant Six for it was known for its toughness and oil leaks.

I had a 1963 Sport Fury with a Max Wedge that was fast for it's time and an orange 70 Duster 340 that I loved.

But thanks for the history lesson...never too old to learn something.

A friend had a used UPS box van with over 300k mi powered by the 225 slant six. Went through 3 torqueflite transmissions but the engine block/heads was untouched. Had a top speed of 50mph (by design) and was burning oil at a quart a week. Most engines in the day barely made it to 100k.

Interesting, UPS has a destroy policy on their package cars(trucks). No resale for liability issues… maybe this was before then..

I was curious and Googled my birthday, 11/02 in the very classic car year of 1957. I was surprised to see some of the people born on 11/02. Some really forgettable presidents like Warren G Harding and James K Polk, and let them eat cake Marie Antoinette. Some of the ones I was happy to share with were Daniel Boone, Burt Lancaster and my favorite Martian Ray Walston.
you forgot David Schwimmer! :)

And of course me.

Yeah, I sent more than my share of slantys to the junkyard. They make a real satisfying thud when I kick them off the back of my scrap trailer LoL

69 charger R/T 440 4 speed I rebuilt in 1989, and sold in 1994 for $10k. They are now going for $5K for a stripped out, rusted out shell with a vin# and a title. I mean AMD makes all the critical sheetmetal panels new, so these can be repaired, but what a cost to do it.

I currently have a 67 barracuda coupe. Was a slant sux 3 on the tree bench seat car. You guessed it, with a heave from my foot the slant sux made a satisfying thud in the dirt at the scrap yard, followed by the small bolt pattern drum brakes, and 7.25 "peg leg", "hand grenade" shit rear end. All I wanted was the body with steering column along with clutch n brake pedals. Car is in the process of getting a 408 stroked 360, a 4 speed manual, and an 8.75 mopar rear with 3.73 gears and a sure grip.

I also have a 69 barracuda coupe. Doing a complete reskin on that one with my son. His will be a 325hp 318 , overdrive automatic from a dakota, and a 3.73 geared ford explorer 8.8 with a locker I narrowed to fit.

My weekend fun car is a 2007 mustang GT 4.6 5 speed. Bought new only 13,000 on the odometer.

Very nice truck for an "old man". You will need a baseball bat stowed close by to beat off all the young chicks who will want to go for a ride!!;)
Hey 60 year old woman here. I've been waiting and waiting for my own since sept. 1st edition rapid red! Of course I've always been a car person since working in a body ship at 16! Now working for for Ford for 30 years.

Don't see why I should add to this thread as I doubt it will be seen by m/any... Anyway, I'm 73. I drive a 2014 Ford Fusion hybrid that has served me well. It only has 87,000 miles on it, so it should have plenty of life left in it. Nevertheless, on June 24, I ordered a hybrid Maverick Lariat. I figured that it was time for a truck, my first, and this one fit the bill. I read a quite bit on this forum and quite frankly, all the jabber about dates and lates, and builds and spills, is getting somewhat boring for me. After all, I'm happy with my Fusion.

Ford did confirm for me that my build should be the week of May 23, but it was originally to be the week of the 16th. So, who knows if it will be pushed out until...

This morning, however, I called Ford customer service and they claim that my order actually has a scheduled start build date of May 24. Now, that might just be another way of saying "the week of May 23", but I figure I'll remain patient about all this...at least until my anniversary order date of June 24. If it isn't actually showing as being built/in production by then, I might have to start giving all this second thoughts.

By the way, May 24 would be sweet as that's my birthday. Oh, and FWIW, that's Bob Dylan's birthday. I'll take that one.
Sailing Away with Dylan definitely trumps Rodman rubbing shoulders with Kim Jr.

Most of the Maverick owners (which are few and far between in my town) are middle-senior age men. As a result, I feel like a spoiled little s*** because I'm 24 and drive a fully-loaded Lariat while everyone else is driving base XL's or XLT's. The reason for it is they're the types who want to keep things simple with less technology in their vehicles in order to keep their price down. I respect that but for me, I've always had to compromise with features and colors on other vehicles in the past. The Maverick was an opportunity to get exactly what I wanted at an affordable price. Since I'm young, I favor having more technology and luxury features. Not because I'm a distracted and s*** driver trying to rely on them but because I accept and utilize the new technological advances in modern vehicle engineering. I know it's more stuff to break in the long-run but that's what a warranty is for.
Hey... I'm 73 and bought a loaded Lariat. So there! ;-)
