I saw this post by @SafetyGuy in another thread and that sounds like a great idea for us in the frozen North ... putting the spare in the bed (under the tonneau) keeps it out of the snow, salt & ice and makes it easier to access if needed

Does anyone have ideas how to keep it from moving around in the bed? I'd like to keep the tire & SIBL from rubbing away at each other all winter ...
Good evening, Maverick123.

Well, I may have an answer for you...again, just what I did to prevent the tire and rim from getting scuffed up while in the box. I have a spray in bedliner as well, as you can see.

I used a couple of spare exercise mat I have piled in the corner from another project.

One under as well one on top where the strap runs across.

I for one do not want to scuff or damage anything.

I hope this helps you out and you may come up a better plan for your own tire.

If you are around Winnipeg area, I would spot you the two mats you would need for my storage configuration. I have lots of extra pieces.

Cheers,

Andy

Ah, that's easy! Also I just noticed this thing in the current Princess Auto ad, it would probably work great but with a setup like yours, but I'd have to figure out where to attach the 3rd strap to ...

I just used an easy to release tie down strap I already had lying about.

I would get your tire in place, use a regular tie down strap...not too heavy duty, and see you are happy with its security. If not, go with a plan B of your own choosing.

Have a good one,

Andy

Bad idea. Especially if you use the bed, making it unable to access. The other tires and rims seem to do quite well on the outside. Just my opinion.

i did have an old Chevy that I mounted the tire up front in front of the grill. I almost ordered a side rail mount on the inside of the bed. Same thing didn't want to reduce the bed carrying cubic feet and I wanted to have access when using the bed.

Keep in mind with the extra weight carrying dirt, gravel etc the chances increases for a flat because of the extra weight driving or pushing it in the tire.

Don't get me wrong no one wants to get on the ground but nobody really wants to get a flat either. Its only needed, when it is needed, keep that in mind.

For me it's the best idea having it stored underneath. Access is available when the bed is used or loaded. Its also out of the way and not having to move it when using the truck. Then again that's just my opinion.

Another thing you just may find out someone popped the tonneau cover and you don't have a spare tire anymore .

Why on earth would someone want the spare in the bed, in the way when it’s so well hidden below.
I wonder how much the center of gravity is raised ? If one could feel it.

Yeah, it would be like driving a Honda Ridgeline. The spare is stowed away in the bed "trunk" so you can't access when the bed is loaded. Brilliant!

Good day, all

That is the beauty of ideas, some work for you, but not for others.

Go with the ones you like or need for your particular situation and take a pass on those that don't appeal.

Have a good one,

Andy

If you want to store your spare in the bed for whatever reason, that third strap is the most important one, in case you need to stop quickly & unexpectedly.

I doubt that the orange strap solution will safely secure a 50-lb tire+wheel in event of an emergency situation.

Read the original post and find out.
Again, the other 4 tires and wheels do fine outside in the snow, slush, mud, water. They are made and manufactured for those specific conditions. IMHO

I agree though different strokes for different folks. For me though it's not reason enough to occupy my bed or to constantly having to move it, possibly getting it stolen and worse moving it to load the bed and not having it with you when needed.

I suggest instead of moving the spare to carry a can of some type of foam sealant can. If you don't have the time and close to home it's a quick fix. Just remember to take it to a tire store asap for a repair or to have them replace it with the spare. Tell it can be replaced or repaired properly. Or have a phone number for service handy like AAA around me that will get on the ground to switch out the flat tire and mount the spare tire. You will pay for this service or a plan that includes this service/convenience

For myself, I will suck it up and get on the ground. I do carry a small hydraulic jack and different hitch receivers and different size balls. Usually I have enough room, if I don't I use the foot well on one side of my back seat until I unload whatever im hauling in the bed. The receivers are self explanatory the jack is i find it easier to use than a scissor jack, if needed, so I keep it handy. The jack is the first thing I would set aside but at the same time if needed the first thing I would grab.

I think he is concerned of having a flat in a snow drift.

Well, there are several options other than just tossing it in the bed....you could mount in standing up in the bed, or get a swing away tailgate mount....my personal favorite would be if someone did a bodyshop reconstruction and mounted it in a special pocket in the rear behind the rear passenger tire like the Station Wagons my mother had in the 60's and 70's...

That is a pretty good item, with the third strap @Maverick123, and I might pop into one our local Princess Auto's to see if they have one in stock.

It definitely has need of a 3rd mount point of course.

My suggestion is to attach them to the floor tie down points provided in the beds of our trucks.

The 3rd strap is would run aft (rearwards) and attach to a sturdy loop/attachment point on the lower of my two sanded 2x6 boards that I have in the back of my truck. They keep my totes from sliding about too much. Many here have the same thing-ish in theirs as well.

This would allay the concern of my orange strap not being sufficient in an accident.

See how we can work together and come up with better solutions when a question is put forward?

Have a good one!

Andy
