Tell them you understand their ignorance on the subject and their lack of knowledge in the C2 platform, it is relatively new after all. Remind them they're thinking about the C1 Focus platform that was replaced in 2018 by the new improved/stronger C2.
This new C2 structure was designed from the beginning with a light truck in mind, the Bronco Sport, Maverick and Transit Connect. The simple fact it also is used in the the 4th generation 2018 Focus was a matter of economics not design and it was adapted to work for the Focus and not the other way around. Sadly the Connect is on hold/canceled.

I actually just hear a lot of praise for the Maverick, which makes sense considering the high demand. Size wise, its also really not exactly small, being virtually the same length as a Ford Escape, but its certainly lower than many fullsize trucks that can be a pain to jump in and out of.

Regarding reliability, Consumer Reports April 2023 issue indicates that the '22s were above average. Supposedly there are complaints about the paint and noises, which I think the forum did identify a design flaw on the passenger door card if I remember right which is probably what that is about, but that has a relatively easy fix. I see they got a small ding on the brakes, which could be the intermittent issue I've heard of the hybrid brakes sometimes being overly grabby.

Just some things I've heard detractors say about the maverick over the course of our ownership experience.

1. It's a focus based truck. Not really, it's based on a more capable and rugged version of the c2 architecture. It resembles more of a bronco sport pickup than a focus pickup.

2. It's not unreliable/poorly built. Basically all of the widespread data we have indicates the maverick in both Ecoboost, and hybrid trim, offers above average reliability. People bring this up a lot, like everything that's more affordable is somehow less reliable long term. The opposite appears to be the case, both with Ford trucks and things like Toyota corollas/Camry's. Cheaper cars ironically seem to be built better than more expensive luxury cars, speaking as an EX BMW owner here.

3. The maverick is a real truck. It may not offer the towing capacity of full-sized trucks, but payload is very respectable, surpassing some off-road versions of things like the tundra, and Silverado zr2. It can haul and tow more than most compact trucks from the 90s, the rangers and Tacomas. You know, the trucks the same people who hate the maverick are praising. It's like "Ah the maverick isn't a real truck, now this 1997 ranger that can haul five pounds before cracking in half, now that's a real man's truck". People like that who constantly prop up every old car, and bash anything modern annoy me to no end.

Whenever I have had second thoughts about getting an AWD, Ecoboost Maverick, I just pull up to a gas pump after a full size truck just leaves. They paid $80 to fill up, I'll pay $35, if I'm running on fumes.

People used to say that about my V8 dodge Dakota that towed over 7000 lbs and was larger than my maverick. It's like saying a 1000 SQ ft house is not a real house compared to a 3000 SQ ft house. My maverick ecoboost has exceeded my expectations.now if it just didn't sound like a sewing machine when I started it

If you think about it, every vehicle anyone buys is a compromise in one way or another. I had a Tundra. Loved that truck. It was comfortable and could tow a house. And would not fit in my garage and got 13mpg on average. I had a VW GTI, most fun car I’ve ever owned, and I’ve had a lot. But you’re not putting your new fridge in there.

Like others here have said, I personally have not had one person say a negative comment about my truck, in person anyway. But I certainly understand that not everyone is going to like it or that it works for everyone. A Maverick isn’t going to replace an F150 if someone needs or just simply wants an F150. The same can be said for the F150, it isn’t going to replace a Maverick if someone needs or just simply wants a Maverick.

The online trolls are just that. They get no reaction from me, other than an occasional “ok”. Let them have their fun. Keeps them off the streets lol. Plus, I would guess a significant percentage of them don’t even own a full size truck. If I had to guess, I’m gonna say a 95 Cavalier.

I usually tell them the Maverick borrows a lot of Hybrid technology from the Toyota Prius, which first went on sale in the US in 2000 - 23 years ago. Many of those still have their original or (inexpensively) rebuilt HV battery and original eCVT, after multi-hundreds of thousands of miles.

When I go to populated areas, if a giant RAM or F-trefiddy gets on my ass when approaching a red light, I just begin driving in hypermile mode. They invariably pass me. But I often show up right next to them at the next red light, just as it's changing to green, without ever coming to a complete stop.

Agreed. My turbo 4 cylinder GTI sounded so much better. $ for $, adjusted for inflation since 2017, I paid almost exactly the same for both vehicles. With the Mav I’d even settle for a quieter sewing machine.

Just keep it simple and ignore what others are saying. If it meets your needs then it's the right vehicle for you. Consumer Reports really likes it if that is saying anything. Looks like a truck to me.

I've had the opposite reaction. Get people approach me in parking lots constantly asking what it is and loving it. Have had three friends purchase one after seeing mine.

Ah, those types of drivers . Funny how we're usually the ones hauling stuff while they're hauling air getting 15 mpg. I swear, my neighbor has a dually ram 2500 on 26 inch spiked rims. I've seen them tow with it once, that's about it.
