Our windshields are only about 1/8 inch thick and that is the problem period ! Too thin ,anything will crack these . Look yourself, where windshield ends and w/s pillar begins. THIS is a design flaw and should be Recalled, it is absolutely safety hazard. I've been a body man for 30 years ,never seen anything like this.

I asked about raising my deductible. Going to 500 with ZERO for glass saved $85/year. If I would do 500 comp and 500 glass it was about 200/year less. Since windshields are a known issue I stayed with my 50 deductible for glass and comp, 250 for collision. Takes a lot of years to break even from 1 claim. I always do what is best for me. I hope you do also.
I've never even had a rock chip in my driving history, hence why I am not super concerned.

What about the better acoustic glass mentioned is this thread for the Mav. Is the better glass windshield thicker??...or is it just "infused" differently to be quieter??

There is definitely a problem with the windshields on these trucks. When you have 2 pieces of glass only 1/16 inch thick, sandwiched between a paper thin sheet of clear plastic ,it's just not strong enough . If everyone with a broken windshield contacted NHTSA with this issue ,they would do something. Why do we all have to pay higher insurance premiums because of under designed ,unsafe windshields.?

So the premium went up more than 3k? Doubtful. My insurance went up because I changed my address. WHY? The company I have locks your rate for 3 years unless you make a change then they raise to the newest rate. When was the last rate increase prior to your claim?
My broker says everybody's insurance is up this year even his, mine was up 300 I flipped out checked around he was telling the truth.
Then I saw the CEO of Allstate in front of congress they asked him how much he made he didn't want to answer, he finally told them 24 million dollars, the company made billions.
Thats why everybody's insurance is up GREED!

Here is the Safelite receipt. Recalibration almost as much as windshield. And, they try to hard sell you new wiper blades for big bucks!

David...how bad is the hit?? Is it just a small circle or dot but cracked.....or is it a hit and the crack line has already spread? If it's the first, I've had 3 hits already...and have repaired/sealed all 3 with the Rain-X Window repair kit off of Amazon. $13 bucks. One reason I decided to try it myself was due to the several posts on here about the "rash" of rock hits and cracks on the Mav windshields. When I first got the first hit, of course I called to get a quote to fix the hit and/or replace the window. 125 to repair the hit....300 something for the entire windshield. This was through Safelite. So I searched online thinking there's GOT to be a cheaper way. Bought the Rain-X kit and walah....sealed the hit and it has not spread. And I am sitting in 100 degree heat every day here in Central Texas. Used the same kit for the next two hits.... which happened from the same spray of rocks (road construction/loose gravel in one spot). 4 hit the window....only two left cracks. Now.....if the hole is too big....or you've got a spreading crack already, you may need a full window replacement anyway

May the odds be with you for that.
Since there doesn't appear to be a federal mandate on strength or resistance to chipping/cracking, just glazing and lamination.

Now - there are rules about the chips and cracks allowed and if in the drivers view blocking vision.
But obviously that now falls on the driver not taking care of a safety issue.

Probably could have the strongest windshield possible - and some goofball will still tail a gravel carrying truck with a big sign that says "must follow 200 feet behind" - and wonder why they have chips.

It's a sound insulating windshield (not sure that's the correct wording), but it reduces noise in the vehicle. It's standard in the lariat trims, not sure maybe in tremor & lobo????
If you don't have the trim level where they are standard from the factory you can pay the difference in cost and have it installed on any trim level. There is a SoundScreen label embedded in the windshield so you will know if yours has it or not when replaced.

Yes, thanks…. I’m aware of what the window is. I was just asking the question if it was “thicker” than the one that I have on my XLT…..the regular glass.

Rock hit windshield . Am I hallucinating 600 bucks to have a windshield calibrated.
Only 600? I paid 1,200 three months after I bought the truck. On top of 8K in hail damage.

I doubt that the SoundScreen glass is any thicker or more resistant to cracking. My factory Sound Screen windshield cracked when I had 945 miles on the trucklet and the crack spread to 18 inches by the next day. It’s pretty delicate stuff.

I had to insist that Safelite replace it with the same, since I have a Lariat and wasn’t willing to let them downgrade me with a cheaper knock off. They brought the wrong windshield to install twice before they brought the right version.

I no longer drive behind gravel trucks or utility trailers on the highway and will intentionally let a couple cars get between me and them.

I don’t know and I’m not going to look the specks up for you but I say;
SoundScreen is Not any thicker or any tougher than the standard windshield in an XL or XLT. It just reduces road noise a little bit.

:geek: 😵 I had a rock hit back in 12-21, never cracked. I just started getting a crack about a month ago,9-25. Never heard of calibrating a windshield? What is that?

The camera at the top requires recalibration whenever a windshield is replaced because it's key to the safety systems. It can be recalibrated for free through Forscan, but Safelite and others love to charge $200-300 for very little work.
