Ordered two XLT Hybrids from different dealers hoping to secure one based on all the allocation concerns. Shortly after ordering , I secured a new job and circumstances changed, this meant I needed transport as early as possible in 2023.

With the price changes for 2023, I was looking at almost $29,000 for a base XLT with hitch, taxes, and tags. While cheap for a truck, it was certainly a big difference from my brand new 2004 Chevy 1500 at $13,000 which I later sold.

In mid December I put a deposit on a base Corolla LE loaded with Toyota Sense 3, hotspot, free emergency calling for 10 years, and I’m now averaging 39-40 mpg based on my drive which includes the freeway.

For the car, 100,000 10 year Toyota platinum warranty that includes rental coverage, towing, winching, hotels, etc, covers all major mechanical and electrical items/electronics, my total cost is less than $26,000. It also had a 3 year 36000 mile and 5 year 60000 standard warranty on the engine. Also includes 8” screen, satellite radio, adaptive cruise control, lane centering, cross traffic alerts, etc etc.

While I understand it’s not a truck and does not have the usability of a truck, at least Toyota communicated with me throughout the two plus weeks I was in contact with them, and it arrived 2-3 weeks earlier than expected with a full tank of gas.

it was built in November in Japan, shipped to CA within a month, delivered to Denver within 7 days by rail over Christmas, and turned over to me two days later last week in 2022.

in addition, no dealer fees and sold at MSRP.

What I don’t understand is why Ford appears so out of step with its customers, delivery times, communication, and following through on our orders and I understand the battery issues, so do they. For people to be waiting well over a year, for others to be built is wrong on so many levels. To leave the ordering banks open after they maxed out doesn’t make sense.

At this point I have already been issued my $1000 deposit back from one dealer which I cancelled, and I will leave the other in place just to see if it ever gets built.

Hoping Ford will get their act together but for me, I unfortunately couldn’t’ continue to wait for many more months with no guarantee of a build even in 2023 despite all the efforts I put in back in September. While I regret not having my Maverick, I’m happy to have 100,000 miles that will be backed by Toyota should anything occur.

Glad you got a vehicle but it seems like you ordered the hottest vehicle in the country in September of 2022. There are still people who ordered in 2021 waiting. Comparing your process of buying a Toyota vs buying the hottest vehicle in the country is a little silly. There aren't any people clamoring to buy a Corolla.

Surprisingly, the supply of regular Corollas are not what you may think!

What I’m comparing is communication, shipping and transport times, and what a vehicle may come with as standard.

Yes, it’s a Corolla that is the most reliable car in the US and has been around in decades, no one will be asking me questions on how long I waited for it.

As I said, it’s not a truck but it’s certainly has a lot of value compared to others and what other companies charge for lesser features.

Thanks for the update ....... I guess....... Comparing a Toyota Corolla to a Ford Maverick ummm Ok..... not to be mean but I dont go to a Maverick Forum to read about Toyota's platinum warranty, if the Corolla has a satellite radio or how long it took to get from Japan to here. You made up your mind to not wait and that's cool but I wonder how many here want to know how to get their own Corolla like you did ? ( Im guessing "zero") You might want to go on over here - The Corolla Forum

You're comparing communication and shipping times for a vehicle nobody is really looking for to one that everyone is looking for. The Maverick was KBBs most researched vehicle for 2022. Not even sure the Corolla made that list. Also, the Corolla has been around for decades and Toyota has the capability of not only predicting what they're going to sell based on decades on sales figures but to also produce them in quantity due to decades of vendor agreements and the capacity to manufacturer them in much larger quantities than the maverick. I don't think you fully understand how forecasting and supply logistics work. Enjoy your Corolla

While I can't say a Corolla would excite me in the least, I do believe that car will serve you well for 200,000+ relatively trouble-free miles if you desire. And the timeline from your inquiry to delivery, as well as your OTD price for the car, features and additional warranty, is impressive.

Good luck to you!

The best takeaway from the OP description of his Toyota buying process, at least for me, is this:

Toyota was able to produce a highly optioned vehicle on spec (built in November, not sold until December) with no supply chain or transport disruptions (both ocean transport and U.S. rail/truck transport).

That suggests that Ford, with all due allowances for the unknowns inherent in a new model launch, could probably learn some things from the Toyota Way.

Although the timeline is actually pretty close to what Ford did when I ordered my 2012 F-350, it appears Toyota was better prepared for chip shortages than Ford and has a better handle on transport logistics.

From order to delivery of the F-350 was only about 6 weeks. Official communication wasn't very good, but a member of the FTE forum was able to give me status updates right up until it left Kentucky and I switched to the rail tracking. Thus, my experience was good but official communications apparently haven't improved much since then.

that's old news around here :( Not sure why you felt the need to come back here on your way out? Trying to flex a little on a Corolla or what?

Great that you got a vehicle OP, but a Corolla is absolutely not comparable in any real way to the Maverick. It doesn't have anywhere near the cargo versatility, nor can it tow 2,000 pounds like the hybrid Maverick can, nor can it seat 4 maybe 5 adults in relative comfort without being hunched over.

Despite its small commonalities, it's like comparing apples to lunar geology. Sure they both exist, but they're nothing alike.

Glad you could get a car you needed when the Maverick didn’t work out. Sorry about all the angry Maverick diehards that don’t seem to want to acknowledge other vehicles exist, despite Ford loving to mention all the new to truck customers ordering Mavericks.

Even if you were buying a car with a longer waitlist, Toyotas process really is just smoother. If Ford could to give customers a rough idea of their place in line, there’s a chance they could keep customers like you. Not knowing if your Maverick will be built in 2 weeks or 2 years makes it difficult to evaluate as an option.
