Most people, myself included, were saying that the Santa Cruz bed can only hold 650lbs as published on one of their marketing sheets, unlike the Ford that can hold its entire payload.

That meant that even though the SC payload was superior to the Maverick, the Maverick could theoretically hold way more in the bed. Well, not so.

Hyundai has clarified, when they said the Santa Cruz bed could hold 650lbs, that was their calculation based on having all the seats filled with average weight drivers. Like the Maverick, there is no specific bed weight limit independent of the total vehicle payload. Confirmed here in the most detailed SC review yet:

I'm probably the only that thinks that the Ford Maverick is hideous and pretty damn ugly and reminds me of the NISSAN CUBE.

I'd even call it more ... dollar store. It looks cheap. Even dressed up in FX4 Lariat trim, it looks bland and boring and a bit like recycled plastic.

It is pretty ugly, and looks like something straight outta 2004 and the headlights are bulky for no reason!

I think the Hyundai Santa Cruz's design looks great especially the front design, and it will prove to be very popular in the all important California market, where it after all was designed.

Ok, so after reading your response, I have to ask...why are you on a Maverick forum if you feel so strongly against it? Just curious.

Who said I was against it ? Did you view the review and the comments ?
I did watch the review and I was

Oh, ok that makes more sense! I thought that you were saying that stuff yourself about the Maverick, which why I asked my question. I did watch the review and scrolled through a number of the post, but I didn't see the one you quoted. Even after watching the review, which I don't understand why he keeps comparing it the Ridgeline, I'm still very happy in my choice of the Maverick over the SC. I wanted a small truck and Maverick looks like a truck, the SC to me looks like a SUV or Crossover. In fact I think if you started the review from the interior without seeing the exterior, people probably wouldn't realize they were looking at a small truck and instead think it's another SUV. But I know there are going to be people that want the plush feel and look inside while having truck abilities outside. That's the beauty of choice! Anyway, sorry for the mis-understanding.

Fair enough. Tell me about your thoughts then about the Santa Cruz ?
It looks like a car/CUV/Subaru Baja evolution. I want something that looks like a truck.

I mean, if you don't like Ford aesthetic then you probably will not like the Maverick. I personally might like the Toyota truck aesthetic more, but I don't necessarily think the Ford design language is ugly. To me the Maverick just looks like a shrunk F150.

The Maverick is cheap. That's the attraction for me.

While I do think it looks pretty good, appearance is at the bottom of the list when I'm shopping for a vehicle.

Pretty funny comment about the “all important California market” and how popular the Santa Cruz will be. Isn’t gas like $4.50-$5.00 in California. Maverick would be more popular just due to that.

You're right, you're the only one who thinks this.

Yeah, although for some reason the Ford Flex that didn't sell well elsewhere was a huge hit in California, and it gets horrible fuel economy. I think most people buy on what they think is cool, even if from a pure logical standpoint its not the winner on paper.

One big thing with many Californians is that most lefties abhor trucks and truck culture (see a flag waiving on the back of a pickup as a right wing thing), but some definitely see the practicality of having a bed. Having a vehicle that drives, rides, parks, and looks more like a crossover but has a bed and isn't even called a truck by Hyundai could have appeal with that demographic.

Personally, I like the styling of the Santa Cruz much better than the Maverick, and the interior I think looks more upscale than the hard plastics I see on the Mav. What I don't like is that the base engine has crap fuel economy, and the turbo engine that gets basically the same fuel economy but with twice the power starts at $37K.

In Canada they only offer turbo AWD, and their very basic trim that would appeal to me converting to USD is only $30K MSRP. I'd totally jump on that if available, but because its not, the Maverick being SO much cheaper is hugely appealing, and I don't have to buy stuff that I don't even want on the vehicle like a rear porthole blocking my view or a sunroof.
