I'm kinda torn when it comes to both of these trucks, and the wishy washy nature of the bed cargo pushes me over to the maverick. i think they both serve a purpose, and both with have its share of fans.

realizing that they are both essentially a wash when it comes to just about everything, I would lean more toward maverick as i would tend to trust the company that's been making trucks for longer than i've been alive.

Fair enough. Tell me about your thoughts then about the Santa Cruz ?
Well, I don't think the SC is Hideous or Ugly. Odd and funky looking,? With out a doubt! I know I'm not the only one saying that. Many YT reviewers online say this as well, but I've never heard one say the Maverick is Hideous/Ugly or that the build looks cheap like it belongs in a Dollar store.
The SC does have a really neat feature, the hidden trunk in the bed. That is cool. So it has that going for it.
Hey, I'm sure the SC is a fine Hyundai vehicle that will appeal to those who like the Hyundai brand........ like those In that all important California market, a state where people can't leave fast enough.
Bottom line, the SC doesn't appeal to me and when all this plays out, probably not to the majority as well. So, for those reason, I'm out!

Most people, myself included, were saying that the Santa Cruz bed can only hold 650lbs as published on one of their marketing sheets, unlike the Ford that can hold its entire payload.

That meant that even though the SC payload was superior to the Maverick, the Maverick could theoretically hold way more in the bed. Well, not so.

Hyundai has clarified, when they said the Santa Cruz bed could hold 650lbs, that was their calculation based on having all the seats filled with average weight drivers. Like the Maverick, there is no specific bed weight limit independent of the total vehicle payload. Confirmed here in the most detailed SC review yet:
On this one Santa Cruz feature (actual honest-to-god payload), to date Hyundai has really screwed the pooch. Probably won't make a difference for SC's target market, definitely won't matter to Maverick buyers. The current SC owners manual section on load capacity is nonsensical. Was the Hyundai technical writer high or just incompetent when this was written? Who knows.

After test drives a couple days ago, other auto writers said same thing that's in the video (the 1906#/1568# range).
Cnet: “How much payload you can haul varies based on trim level, ranging from 1,568 pounds for the Santa Cruz Limited and 1,906 pounds for the SE. The front-wheel-drive Santa Cruz is rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds, but turbocharged, all-wheel-drive models can pull up to 5,000 pounds. Trailer sway control is standard, but Hyundai recommends you keep the load under 1,650 pounds for trailers without brakes.”

Detroit Free Press: “The Santa Cruz’s payload — the total weight it can carry, including people in the cabin and cargo in the bed — varies from one model to another, declining as more features — which add weight — become standard. It ranges from 1,906 pounds for a base Santa Cruz to 1,568 for the top model.”

Edmunds: “When Hyundai first revealed the Santa Cruz, it listed the bed capacity at 660 pounds, a relatively low number considering the high payload rating. Since then however, the automaker has removed that number from its press materials and won't tell us what the bed capacity is. Instead, it simply quotes its newest payload numbers, which have been revised significantly since the vehicle was first revealed. Payload capacity is actually quite high when you consider the Santa Cruz's small size, ranging from 1,568 pounds on all-wheel-drive Limited models all the way up to 1,906 pounds on front-wheel-drive SE models. That's more than enough to rival the capability of any midsize pickup.”

However, actual payload sticker on a SC Limited AWD I test-sat was only the supposedly-wrong 1411#'s mentioned in the owners manual.

So is Hyundai gonna re-write the owners manual (they should)? They gonna re-label existing stock units with supposed "real" payload? A lot more confusing than it needs to be.

At least Ford is clear-cut on load carrying capacity for all their models, no ambiguity:

Was it Hyundai or Kia that recently did a recall just for that reason, they had you bring your vehicle in to replace the user manual and slap a new sticker on the driver's side door on top of the old one with revised numbers.

There was also the Kia Soul that had user manuals in the US saying 87 ron+mon/2 octane recommended and in Asia saying 91 ron+mon/2 octane even though they were all made in the same factory, confusing people. Fail!

Even Ford's not immune from this.

I'm probably the only that thinks that the Ford Maverick is hideous and pretty damn ugly and reminds me of the NISSAN CUBE.

I'd even call it more ... dollar store. It looks cheap. Even dressed up in FX4 Lariat trim, it looks bland and boring and a bit like recycled plastic.

It is pretty ugly, and looks like something straight outta 2004 and the headlights are bulky for no reason!

I think the Hyundai Santa Cruz's design looks great especially the front design, and it will prove to be very popular in the all important California market, where it after all was designed.
Why are you here if you hate the Maverick so much. Sounds like you need a Santa Cruz... go for it!
