I know compared to many people on here I haven't waited very long. As of today I put in my "reservation" with my dealer 168 days ago and my order was finalized with Ford 118 days ago (Nov 9 2022, I'm in Canada).

Three orders from my dealership were scheduled as of the last proper scheduling week. I am at priority 19 with them and likely my order is the last one they put in. I was called in on what they said was "the last day" to convert my pseudo MY22 order to a proper MY23 order. I have no idea how many orders are ahead of me.

That's the bad news. On the better side, I did order an EB so unless Ford keeps ignoring EB retail orders in favour of fleet or stock I should have it built in this MY.

The dilemma comes from the fact that we are now on the 3rd week of no scheduling and Ford put out the news that the 2024 Ranger order banks open in May. This got me thinking and I looked at what a Ranger would cost (2023 since the B&P isn't up for 2024s yet). Then for kicks I looked at the local inventory.

There are two 2023 Ranger Lariats with 501A (essentially Lux) and BAP within an hour's drive of me built on Feb 20, both likely on the same convoy though to different dealers. One is Azure Grey and one is Carb Grey - I was always torn between these two colours and feel I would be equally as happy with either.

The question comes as to whether I am actually genuinely interested and would enjoy either of the Rangers as much as my Maverick order. I don't want to be settling just because I could potentially get the truck within a month or 2 rather than 5 months or more.

Just wanted to ask for your thoughts to hopefully help me with this. Suggestions? Advice? Opinions?

Thanks in advance!

All I can tell you is I got my Ecoboost XL 5 days ago after over 500 days of anguish, frustration, anger, and weekly heartbreak. I’m not gonna lie, it is wonderful being off of the Ford merry go round of Hell .That being said……I absolutely love this little friggin truck!

Personally I would wait for what I want and not just jump on something else because it's available unless you are in a critical place and need a new vehicle immediately. If I were going to consider a ranger it wouldn't be a 2023. I would wait and get the 2024 newer model. You'll get 50 different answers, but that is mine. I have a 2022 Maverick and it is by hands down the best vehicle I have ever owned and I've owned quite a few being 64 years old. :) My only issue with my truck is that is it black and I am not a big fan. I originally ordered cactus gray, let the dealer talk me into switching to the Ecoboost which is not what I wanted. But then this Shadow Black Hybrid became available when the person that ordered it decided not to buy it. So, they sold it to me. Whatever you do , don't get black. They stay dirty and show scratches so quickly. Good Luck!

I would hold out for awhile. I think 2024 Ranger order bank is opening in May. If your Mav is not scheduled by then consider ordering a 24 Ranger.

Rangers cost more, people seem to say they don't ride as well, but they are clearly more capable. i think the supercab is ~$5000 USD more than equivalent Maverick (tho the Mav seems to have a bit more included); Crew Cab is $7 grand more. Trucks are much less affected by model year changes, expect a Ranger to hold its value very well. I'm sure the new Ranger will be much nicer inside, probably rides a little better, probably is equal in capability to the old one. Expect it to be just as unobtainable as the Maverick.

So, what's it worth to get a truck now? Only you can say.

I mean, the question is "can you afford to wait."

Like, is it just impatience, or do you absolutely need a vehicle now. Because if you need the vehicle immediately... yeah. Makes sense.

But if you can wait until the Maverick is built, even if you decide not to take it, you'll have an actual choice -- a choice you can make without regret about what you "could have" done.

Many of you are saying the same things that I have been thinking. I think my next step is to take a test drive in a 23 Ranger to see if I would enjoy driving it the same.

The two stock Rangers are almost exactly what I would have ordered anyway so I am not settling in terms of packages. Any additions are easy aftermarket and DIOs anyway. (Paint protection, tonneau cover, mud flaps, etc.)

I don't find my excitement about the idea dimming over the course of hours but that's not a long time compared to the years I would have whichever vehicle I end up choosing.

In CAD, these Rangers are ~$6,500 more before tax. I do feel that I get $6,500 more truck & features with the Ranger, though, so the price feels justified. (Rain sensing wipers, upgraded sound system, Fx4 package, near double towing capacity, etc.) It's just a matter of whether I am okay paying that much more.

On the flip side, I know what my car is worth as a trade in right now and it may not be worth near as much by the time the Maverick would get built and shipped.

This is definitely going to take more thinking on my part.

If you are interested in a ranger may as well see what the 24 tacomas are gonna be like, unless you are a diehard ford guy.

I'm in a similar boat as if not for Ford ignoring the EB retail orders, they had the capacity to have most of them scheduled by now. Which would have worked with my dealer's earlier estimates and my need to have one before June.

Now, unless I am scheduled early in the next wave, I'm not getting it before June and I need another vehicle before then. So, I told my dealership if I am still not scheduled at the end of April, I'm likely going to jump to something else because my current vehicle is being held together by spit, duct tape, and the grace of God.

The EB Maverick fits what I need but I'm not going to let Ford dictate my life. If they don't want to build it when they clearly have the capacity to do so, I'll buy something else. I've been eyeballing the Explorer. While more expensive, it is on par with the Maverick in terms of cargo capacity once the third row is folded down. As I don't need that third row 90% of the time, that would work for me.

Quick update if anyone is even interested haha.

I went to the dealership with the Carbonized Grey 2023 Ranger incoming. I was able to see a 2019 XLT in the same colour and test drive a 2021 Lariat. They also had a (fleet XLT) Maverick in Carbonized Grey right near the two Rangers so I was able to very directly compare it. Ultimately I found I preferred the Ranger styling more and the increased capability would be more likely to serve me better for longer.

I put a deposit down on the incoming truck and cancelled my Maverick order. I was easily able to get my entire deposit back from my order, which I was very glad for.

Estimates are ~1-2 months for the truck to arrive as it hasn't shown as shipped from the factory yet.

Felt a little sentimental saying goodbye to my Maverick order, since I had thought of it as mine for almost 6 months, but I'm also very excited to get my Ranger!

Thank you all for your advice and opinions, I really wanted to hear all sides of the debate before making my decision.

Sometimes things work out the way they are suppose too. Good Luck with your Ranger, they are nice trucks.
