Carbon Build-Up?

Good morning,
I hear lots of talk about GDI engines needing carbon cleaning on a regular basis at reletively low mileage intervals. How many have actually had to do that, and at what mileage? Or how many have had issues from excessive build-up. I am referring to the 2.0 EB engine. I am at 68k miles and am not experiencing any issues yet.

My Tremor with the 2.0 EB may be new but I have owned EB's for a decade now. Did a lot of research. Most of the hard info indicated early DI use in VW/BMW and others in the late 1990-2000 was the source. A lot of blame was aimed at lack of or mis-use of VVT causing reversion (combustion gasses flowing up the intake past the valve). Since then better engineering and timing of the VVT an big improvements in oil specifications have reduced carbon buildup significantly. Also driving habits have a lot to do with the problem, short trips where the engine especially the oil does not get to operating temperature. Another source is low RPM operation. These small displacement engines meed to run above 2000 RPM, with occasional "Italian Tune Ups". There are 3 2.7s and a 2.0 in my family, with over 300000 miles, no buildup problems no catch cans used. Just good habits and oil changes early with oil meeting specifications.

It is definitely a real thing for the 22-24 EBs but will carbon build up really cause issues? It could but unlikely. You’ll get to 150k before you would see a performance decline and by then the 8F35 will be holding on for dear life.

Monthly mine sees 5,000 rpm in the form of
Italian tune ups.
5,250 rpm is where the torque and horsepower numbers meet, in All engines.
Daily I drive it briskly. Good Mpg’s only exist in the two overdrive gears, 7 & 8th
Zero to 55-60 mph gets me into 7th
I get there, briskly, 3,000-3,500 rpm on the walk through the gears.

Engines like humans need to sprint.
Regularly.

All blood born diseases are born in low
Oxygenated blood.
Just like carbon build up in engines.
After about 25 years old we no longer sprint and that means we don’t use the bottom 2/3rds of our lungs.

LOL.... I tell my wife the same thing, Im just letting it Breath", when I hit 80 mph on a "no other car" straight away in our Mav. Were she gets "really" nervous is when I do it with my GT500 @ 120! Boy.... do I get the weather report (nagging) then I tell ya!

An AI search only brings up the popular opinion. These are not exactly well informed opinions. I'd never use such as a basis for a decision. 48k on our 23 and no issues.

Just to clarify the thread 2025 and newer have both GDI and Port injection So much talk about oil catch cans for older models . Just for others to know,. I know OP engine only has direct injection.
