Can someone (really) explain allocations?

I know we have a few folks that actually understand how allocations really work, so let me pose a question regarding ordering a 2024, whenever the order banks come open. I was very lucky to get my 2023 Maverick from a very small, local dealer, and they shared the sales numbers with me, so I would like to get an understanding of what might happen in the 2024 allocations, based on those numbers.

2021/2022 Ordering window- They took orders for 6 - 2022 Mavericks in total. Only 5 EBs were built and delivered, the 1 Hybrid order (mine) was cancelled/rolled over to a 2023.

2022 ordering window - They took ZERO Maverick orders during the short ordering window, Only my cancelled/rolled over Hybrid was built and delivered in 3/23 after 491 days.

Does this imply that they will likely have 0 to 1 allocation for 2024 Mavericks? I know they sell mostly larger trucks, and have informed me that they have more Super-Duty truck orders than they have allocations.

Any educated guesses out there as to whether it would be reasonable to try to order from them again when orders open for 2024 Mavericks? They do require a $1,000 non-refundable deposit.

No - they suck. They just want to use your money for a year - then to say "nonrefundable" ??? There are plenty of dealers that dont charge any deposit hoping you DO turn down the truck so the can get their greasy, filthy, stealership hands on it for a tidy 5K, 7K or even 10K markup.

Only Ford Motor Company can really explain allocations. From the experts I've been listening too for the last year or so, the allocation allotment method can change slightly from year to year and across product lines and perhaps even from dealership to dealership because of incentive programs or accommodations Ford might offer to certain dealerships. Unless you have access to an insider at Ford, even an educated guess will probably be speculation at best. The one thing that seems to be consistent, is that allocations are somehow related to previous sales volume.

Working with a low volume dealer that requires a hefty nonrefundable deposit to maybe get your truck for you sounds like not the best strategy for next year. I'd widen your search.

I'm on my phone, so takes forever to type. But I will give you the keyword "market basket formula" as something to Google. It is part of ford allocation methodology. When I'm on a computer I might be able to elaborate more. For now, know that it is not as simple as "they sold 6 last year so they get 6 next year". Allocations take into account previous year sales of multiple model lines. Not just the maverick. So their maverick allocation also depends on sales of other vehicles last year. It is more complicated than that. But that is one large part of allocation distribution.

Do they sell a lot of Escapes/ Bronco Sport ? It seems Tim Bartz said that was a factor. I don't like the $1000 deposite but if they are a local dealership you really like and trust I don't think that's a game stopper. I think overall chances will be higher next year for everyone but it looks like there are going to be a lot of 2023 carry overs.

From what I have seen and read here, there will be no 2023 carry overs. If a 23 doesn’t get built, it does not get carried over to a 24.

For model year 23 it is mainly based upon total previous year sales of Maverick, Bronco Sport, Escape and Ranger. It is possible they will change the mix of vehicles for 24 allocation.

It's not just customer order sales it is total sales. So if they placed some dealer stock Mav orders and sold those, they would count towards 24 allocation.

They seem to sell few Escapes, Bronco Sports and the other "passenger cars". I think F-150s and larger form the basis of most of their sales.

I knew when I ordered that it was a risk, but since there were NO Ford dealers with prior year Maverick sales before the 2022 ordering, I knew they really couldn't have a set allocation. But now that they've had 2 years of ordering, at 6 total and 1 total...I'm concerned that they may have a struggle with 2024 allocations.

Correct I should not have used “carry overs”. If dealers do as they should there will be lots of prioritized orders from MY 23.

I understand that...but no matter whether there is a "carry over process" or not, there is still a pent up demand for what, 22,000 unbuilt hybrids? I don't see the 2024 ordering to be much different than the 2023 ordering was....short and oversold.

I wasn't fond of the deposit, but it was my first contact with this local dealer, and they agreed to X-Plan. It will always be more of a contract to me if money actually changes hands and is receipted. Besides, they took a credit card that has a 1.75% cash rebate to me, so them holding it for 491 days didn't make me lose that much interest.

This dealer is local and services al three of my Fords now, so hopefully I'll have a decent relationship with them...but only if they can get allocations for a 2024.
