My seldom-used Isuzu box truck is stranded tonight with a dead battery & I dont have the necessary tools to pull/change the battery.

I don’t know the first thing about electronics…. And i don’t have my owners manual with me (I know…. I know).

Can my factory 400W backseat plug be used to power this battery charger? I have a 2023 Hybrid XL.

If so, should my Mav be on or off during the charging?

Thanks so much in advance for the help!!

If you have a trickle charger, maybe.

Better off getting a portable, battery powered jump starter

...however, if you have all day and all night you could set the charger pictured to the trickle setting that shows it uses 2 amps...

About the best use I have found for the outlet is to power the charger for my Milwaukee 18v & 24v power tools. At 400 watts it won't power a blender for tailgate parties. It will power my LED work lights.
Sure would have been nice if they would have made it 2kW

I bought the $65 Harbor Freight one....charged it the full 12 hours as instructed.....and it did NOTHING.

Then I read the fine print on the box and it said it was designed only for 4-cylinder engines.....WTF????

Especially on jump boxes. JNC660 works very well, and lasts 6-10 years. That's what I keep behind the seat in my Maverick.

that's not the issue. when a car battery is discharged below 12.0v it permanently loses capacity. it's not a cell phone and can't go to zero and then be recharged and operate normally.

go back to harbor freight and get a toolkit that has wrenches and sockets and at least one adjustable wrench. remove the battery and take it to an autoparts store. get a new one and exchange the old. hook up the trickle charger if you don't drive the old truck at least once a week.

One thing overlooked here...is that the jump start in the picture is the old style with the large wound transformer in it.
For it to put out 15 amps.....it probably uses at least twice that much input power. There is significant loss in these when converting 115 VAC to 13 VDC.
The new "invertor" style battery chargers have much less loss.

This thread is several days old. OP, did you try it and did it work?
i believe that the maverick inverter is modified sine wave as well. There are a few things that don’t like modified sine, microwaves, some clocks, and some battery chargers. Looking at the age of the charger, you could damage it from the “dirty” power of the inverter.
In terms of jump starting, most modern vehicles with active power management are not designed to jump start other vehicles. The computer sees that your battery is charged and reduces the output of the alternator in order to save fuel. Perhaps the heater at full truck works? This may be completely different in a hybrid, but I have tried jump starting with my Cruze and it won’t work. My sister tried jump starting with her Subaru and it didn’t work.
20 years ago, the lead mechanic at the auto repair shop I worked for told me never to use my car to jump start. Said something about surging the power to your computer and frying it. He only recommended using jumper boxes, chargers, or jumper batteries.
If you haven’t already, good luck.

FYI. This thread is an interesting take on the "might be a split phase modified sine wave"

I ended up not trying it….

Based upon the responses on this thread that overwhelmingly expressed skepticism about it…. I decided waiting to plug the charger into an warehouse outlet the following morning using a 100ft extension cord would be the more prudent move…… So that is what i did. Isuzu started right away and I got it safely stashed away into hibernation….. problem solved.

DEFINITELY was fearful of “popping fuses” and possibly damaging wiring/electrical on my immaculate Mav…..

FWIW….. that old Die-Hard battery charger is AWESOME and has always worked spectacularly!!

That is interesting.
I don’t even pretend to understand AC current and how the 2 phases work. All I know is that in order to convert dc to ac a lot of switching has to happen. The way I understood it was that with a modified inverter it would provide full voltage to one prong, then half to both, and then full to the other prong and it cycles through this 60 times per second to make a fake sine wave. I am sure that my understanding is wrong, and would love someone to correct me. Maybe multimeters are another thing that doesn’t play nice with inverters?

Those old chargers were workhorses. Just have to be careful because I don’t believe they are automatic chargers and can boil your battery.
